Re: What\'s the dumbest purchase you\'ve ever made?

Let's see it was either a 1931 or a 1932 Ford Deluxe Roadster that was involved in a fire. I went clear to Rochester, New York to pick it up with a flatbed trailer. I was going to restore the thing to its natural state. I ran out of interest long before I ran out of funds.

Since my father was a collector of Model A Fords at the time I quietly gifted it to him. I don't think that he ever restored it either as he already had too many to drive himself.

Re: What\'s the dumbest purchase you\'ve ever made?

We never did the time share thing though we have listened to a couple of sales pitches. Besides, I really like the whole maid and eating out thing when on vacation. What we did was buy into a travel club where you get discount hotels and airfare. Seemed to work okay but it just didn't fit in to the way we vacationed. We didn't fly all that much (which was its biggest area of savings) and to use the hotel thing you had to know where you would be staying ahead of time. We usually just drive to we see someplace interesting. I might just as well have thrown the $1400 out the window of the car. Oh well, that's how you gain wisdom.....I guess:(

Re: What\'s the dumbest purchase you\'ve ever made?

I once bought a house in Los Angeles County. The only good thing about it was I bought it before Proposition 13 limited the tax increases. I won't address the traffic or crime problems, the shopping center that was built next door, or even the two major earthquakes. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: What\'s the dumbest purchase you\'ve ever made?

In 1976, I took 45 cents and my underage self down to the local liquor store and bought a tin of Copenhagen.

Without a doubt the number one stupidest purchase I have ever made /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif. Comparable only to the hundreds or thousands of other tins I bought over the next 27 years /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

Anyway, clean since April 9th. Only a week but it's a start, and the wife says if I can keep it up then she will remove all objection to a new tractor. How's that for a carrot. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mike,

Way to go! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I can't speak to the chewing stuff, but I quit cigarettes just over 3 years ago and have not regretted it one bit. I can imagine that quitting "chew" can be just as difficult. Are you doing it cold turkey, or using the patch? I used the patch and it worked GREAT! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You've got a great carrot there! Wish my wife had made me that offer. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Just remember that all the money you'll be saving by not buying the chew will go towards some nice attachments for that tractor the wife promised you. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good luck and hang in there. It gets a lot easier! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What\'s the dumbest purchase you\'ve ever made?

OK, I'll admit it: All of that talk you would hear back in 1999 of massive Y2K computer failures, grid collapse, and the total collapse of society alarmed me.

So I went out and bought 200 pounds of Navy beans, 100 pounds of pinto beans, 200 pounds of rice, and two cases (96 rolls per case) of Toilet Paper for the "rollover."

There were no gas shortages in my neighborhood for a LONG WHILE after that "rollover"!

If I were your downwind neighbor I would have donated a cow to get you off the bean diet. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: What\'s the dumbest purchase you\'ve ever made?

Well maybe not the dumbest but the most recent. I went to the local Homier roaming tool sale over the weekend and purchased a "chair automotive creeper". Put it together and sat on it then within minutes it snapped in half. I certainly gave myself and the wife a laugh. 10 dollars down the drain!!!! I must admit, I went there to purchase a 3pt quick attach for my tractor, which they didn't have, and walked out with the creeper. They do sell some junk though and the people were eating it up in droves! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
