Lewis:

This may sound ridiculous, but what's wrong with a small pick-up. For that money you could get a decent compact pickup that would be comfortable, could carry up to 1,000 lbs, and could be used on road as well as off, would go as fast as you want to and would be good in all weather. The down side is no dump box. A good 4 banger with a manual transmission would not use an excessive amount of gas.

Unless you NEED the utility vehicle for off road use, I think you might be ahead in confort, convenience and Utility. If you're building a house, the pick-up will also come in handy to pick up stuff at the building supply place and could tow a trailer as well. If it doesn't work out, you could sell it in a year for very little loss and get the utility vehicle.

Re: What\'s the real difference between styles of ATV

I don't play golf, but have ridden on a golf cart that I considered pretty fast. What is the speed of a governed ATV like compared to a fast golf cart? Same-slower-faster? My wife isn't really looking for speed. Our 3 year old granddaughter will be a passenger a couple weekends a month. An electric cart may be an issue with cold weather keeping charged several months a year in the mountains of NC. We want the open air ride, so a beatup truck is not the way we want to go. She may want to go onto small woods trails after she gets the hang of it. But as far as serious off roading and mud goes, that won't happen. Some of the hills and trails would be about 20-25% angle for a hundred feet or more at a time. What type of governer is installed? Is it a mechanical device that restricts the throttle cable or electronic? I would prefer no roll bar.

Re: What\'s the real difference between styles of ATV

I bought the Gator in the avatar last year. $3600 out the door. Used, diesel, electric dump, etc.

Side by side seating and a steering wheel helps to teach kids to drive - the thing is a kid magnet same as an ATV however much slower, lower, & stable. My gator is older & speed is about 15 MPH max /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Once you get something it'll be used for way more than mail.

Last weekend my aunt stopped in drove up to the house & for some reason started backing down the road.

Now it had been raining for 5 days straight.

My road has both a curve and slope to it.

She managed to get her Taurus crosswise off the road with about a foot of daylight showing under the rear wheels and kept moving until the fronts stuck in the mud.

I stood in the barn out of the rain watching but didn't have a camera.

Now, I have several machines capable of pulling the car out but they would also tear up the lawn & road since everything was saturated.

Anyway I knew the gator would do the least damage, just not certain the weight was enough. My aunt is 65 y/o & had never seen the gator before. She drove the gator, I chained up to the rear of her car & drove her car. The gator pulled it out instantly! Only indication it was even there were 4 2" high bumps of gravel where the rear axle locked gator tires dug in before dragging that Taurus back up on the road.

The kids are adult supervised (ride along is the rule) but they have bumped trees, concrete stoops, etc. The bumps are not speed related but more big picture judgement - they watch intently one side to clear something & other side hits. The plastic gator fenders are torn but still there - they just flop around a bit.

There is many more years of practice so I'm in no rush to repair it.

Re: What\'s the real difference between styles of ATV

We wanted a "family" utility vehicle and had to make the same tuff choices. We did tons to research and comparison shopping. At that time the Mule 610 seemed like the best choice because: 4wd, locking diff., roll cage, bench seat, 25 mph speed, local dealer support, Kawasaki quality. My wife and kids drive ours all of the time now. We also use it to pull the lawn sweeper, lawn roller, fertilizer spreader, and wagon. The low range comes in handy! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It is quiet and a fuel mizer!
If we had to do it all over again I would also highly consider a Rhino, mainly due to it's higher top speed.
Some of the brands we strongly considered:
John Deere-base model was to slow. Fancier models were out of our price range.
Yerf Dog-very affordable but no 4wd or service.
Polaris- we have owned 5 Polaris ATV's and everyone was a lemon, quality is very poor based on my experience.
Most of the other brands didn't have a dealer in our area.
Good luck!

If you would like (I am not trying to sell something on this forum) I know someone local to us both who is reputable and has a used 6x4 Gator with gas engine. I have not seen it, and apparently is well-used but also well maintained and has some additional features. He is asking about $3500.00 for it, I think. My opinion is that machine is more than enough for your purpose and would be easy to drive and has a lot more use in it. You could find something like it used and upgrade later if your needs dictated it. If you wish to PM me I can give you more information.
