So what are the conditions when diesel would still be used? Pramitol calls for 100-200 gallons of oil per acre for faster "topkill". Why would someone do that instead of applying a fast-acting post-emergent herbicide in addition to the Pramitol?

Rodeo is the Roundup equivalent for any area that may include ponds, ditches, or any other that would produce run-off into a water area. Both are made by Monsanto. If you think Roundup is expensive, wait until you see the price on Rodeo.
Actually,I believe 2-4-D is also rated for aquatic use. I'll check the label if I think of it tonight. 2-4-D is really cheap and is a tried and true product.

Round-up is cheap. Price Arsenal AC, $165/qt $1480/1.5 gal

Re: What\'s the stuff that kills plant life in ditches?

You mention 2-4-D, is this the same stuff as the 2-4-5 T bottle i found in my fathers barn a few years ago ? The bottle has been lost for some years, but this old stuff is known to kill nearly everything, from thistles and brush, to oak trees.
They say in the old days a liter of 2-4-5-T was enough to kill 10 hectares of grassland.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think it's probably illegal now, so i dont want to spill it on grasses or other stuff that Roundup would kill as good, but keep it safe and when needed, use a very little bit to kill brush, or put it on stumps to prevent regrowth.
I cant believe it's healthy stuff though and prefer to use a safer glyphosate, but for the hard applications it comes in handy....

Re: What\'s the stuff that kills plant life in ditches?

If you want to be sure that everything in your ditch dies, then simply do what I do: spend hundreds of dollars on expensive trees or shrubs, try to plant them there, and watch them die.

It's a time-tested technique. When you try to plant something, it all dies.

That's the difference between a plant and a weed. A plant is something you feed, water, and take care of and it dies anyways. A weed is something you spray, pull, and try to kill and it thrives.

That's the way it is for me anyways!

Re: What\'s the stuff that kills plant life in ditches?

I run my water softener discharge to the road ditch. That solves two problems...

1) It keeps the salt from my concrete septic tanks and out of my leach beds.

2) It kills the grass in my ditch. When it gets out to my ditch, it goes into a Tee, so some of the water goes one way and some goes the other way... to kill the most grass possible.

Re: What\'s the stuff that kills plant life in ditches?

We have a similar problem. The neighbors septic gray water is pumped to our ditch. So I really don't want to stand in the crap water to weed-whack. I use Round-Up but need something a bit more powerful.
