Turkey Buzzard for sure!

My neighbor has been keeping some fed for so long with some of his "trappings" that the grass or crops don't grow where he's fed them for so long.

Yea was thinking that, the head does look like a vulture, I've seen them in the air and was told that's a turkey vulture, but never seen one close up. Heard they can really make a mess where the nest/live. Not a very handsome fellow for sure.

I call them all buzzard, that one is for sure is a Turkey vulture, they sure leave a lot of nasties behind anywhere they go and roost.

Ps. Sure am glad our national bird of choice for Thanksgiving happens to be turkey and not turkey vulture, yikes

About the turkey vultures, like I said I've seen them in the air but not close up, one day we had about 5-6 flying around over my house, couldn't get them all in the frame though. Easily recognizable with those widely spaced feathers at the wing tips I guess.

While I got you here if you'll remember I have no dip stick in my 1700's tranny, I think you measured it before for me, do you happen to remember how deep the full mark is, say from the top of the filler opening to the fluid level. I meant to engrave the measurement on the cap but didn't, mine now is about 6.5 inches down and looks pretty empty. May be OK as I seem to remember 7"?

7" is right. if I remember you should not tighten the deep stick cap in so the distance should be 7" flush with the opening. I don't believe 1/2'' one way or another make much difference as the inlet screen for the pump stays fully flooded. The transmission gear lube is mainly done by splashing and I don't think the gears are fully submerged in the oil based on the dipstick oil level mark.

Yup, turkey vulture. Different than a buzzard, though I don't recall the exact differences.

Buzzard is the English term for a hawk. Hawks and vultures are very different. Turkey vultures are scavangers. They are one of the few birds in the world that can actually smell. Turkey Vultures are forest vultures, they cannot rely on site to find carrion. Smell is the next best option. The reason why vultures circle over their food is one, they need to make absolute sure the ground is clear of predators (lions, hyenas, bobcats, wolves etc). These birds are not very agile and have no real way to defend themselves like hawks and eagles. So landing at the wrong time is just not an option they'd like to entertain. Another reason for the circling is to let others know there is food. The more birds on the ground means more eyes watching out for predators. They also circle because it's conserves energy. Flying at level flight uses up a lot of energy, when you circle and use thermals it doesn't. Here's a picture of the King Vulture from S. America. This bird is another forest vulture and is another one of the few birds that uses smell for locating carrion.

This post reminds me of a funny story about a former boss. We worked on the 4th floor of a building and she was my director. One morning she came out of her office screaming as if she was totally disgusted. It turns out that two turkey vultures had chosen the ledge outside her office window to procreate the species. She heard something behind her and looked out the window to see them in amorous embrace. Love was NOT in the air. She would not go back into her office the rest of the day.

Don't believe everything on that wikipedia thing....buzzard is a commonly misused name for vulture...there are many different species of buzzards...referring to hawks. Europeans use that term. Here's what a buzzard is....this is a common buzzard from Europe. Similar to our red tailed hawks etc. It's a member of the buteo family.
