Bill, are you referring to " Crystal Hot Sauce " ? It is low priced and from Louisiana...and we love it...sounds like what you describe...not too hot can put it on anything and it brings the flavor out.

Personally I like a natural smoke flavor rather than smear on flavors but I do like a little dipping sauce...

IMO just about any bottled BBQ sauce can be improved by adding a few key ingredients...

To penetrate the meat at all for marinating it must be thinned...I use cider vinegar but wine or more exotic vinegars work good too...I also like fresh lemons...after marinating I add natural honey and any other typical condiments like hot sauce, mustard, brown sugar etc...etc...

For a regular hot sauce I love Crystal...especially with fresh oysters h/s...
'Louisiana' brand is a good second choice and works good for making hot wings like Crystal...

I like to use pecan and other types of hickory for pork and chicken and mesquite for briskets and short ribs...but it's fun and tasty to try some fruit woods too...I recently did a couple of turkey breasts using some apple and a little cherry...FWIW...wally-world and the box stores have a good selection of different wood chips...very reasonably priced...

Any gas grill with a lid can be used to smoke most cuts of meat...just put the well soaked wood chips in a steel or iron pan on one side of the grill and the meat on the other...(aka indirect cooking)...only light the burner under the wood pan and set it to low...when it quits smoking add more chips...

...finish with a little direct heat and your favorite smear on sauce...
..

Coming from the land of Myron Mixon and other BBQ legends of the South, I've tried a lot of Barbeque sauces. I usually make my own. But on a whim one day because I needed some bulk sauce, more than was practical for me to make because I was in a hurry, I went to Save a Lot and bought their store brand "Kurt's". By far the best BBQ "bought" sauce I have tried. I was blown away. Sweet/tangy flavor with just a hint of cumin.

Tiger Sauce is a really good all around hot sauce for a little heat and a little sweet and a good add in for cheap bbq sauce. My wife uses it on baked flounder along with a little melted butter.
But for "hot pepper/vinegar" sauce, Crystal or Louisiana hot sauce is better to me than Tobasco brand and a better value for sure.

Keeping it simple.

Sprinkle crushed dried hot pepper to taste on the grillings. Then sprinkle just a tad of brown sugar.

If the quality isn't the best also brush on a little Worcestershire sauce.

We love Billy's Bar B Q sauce - vinegar based from Tarboro, NC - close to WR Long - or JR Long, as one member calls them :).

The music on their website is almost as good as the sauce...
