The 650lb large square bales would be perfect to move around and I could transport them easy enough. Don't know if anyone delivers them around here.

Sounds like everyone is in the same boat. The trouble is that this rain situation is effecting such a large area of the country.

I could make a trip with a large trailer worhtwhile if I went as far as Ohio, or down to VA or NC but it seems that they might be in the same situation. Might not save money but if I get better quality and break even it's worth it to me.

I like to drive so it's just an excuse for a roadtrip /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

If this continues and everyone starts getting hay delivered from elsewhere, I can see the hay prices skyrocking here come fall/winter.

Right now I go get my own decent hay for $2-2.50 a bale. I have however cleaned out a very large chunk of this farmers barn. I though I would have been done with the old and onto the new stuff weeks ago.

Plenty of people getting the same stuff delivered for $4 a bale. I don't relish the idea of $5-6 bales if this continues.

Well down here in NC its been raining since October of 2002.
I have missed a huge number of work days on the property
due to rain. This week it rained Sunday night, yesteryday,
last night, which is supposed to continue until the end of the
week. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Its been like this since October with very few
breaks.

I finally got over the 400 hour make on the tractor a few
weeks back. I should have reached that mark in November of
2002.....

I'm not sure if there is going to be any hay around here for
awhile....

That's what I thought, the entire NE and beyond dowen to the Mid Atlantic area is under water. When I mentioned going as far as NC or Ohio, I was really only indicating mileage. The more I hear I don't think anything in that distance is going to be much better.

Sure it's tough for me but for guys who depend on hay for a living or to feed their animals it's got to be terrible.

I just was forcsed to cut my grass/lawn and it was more like floating than driving the lawn tractor. I had no choice but to tear it up somewhat because if it gets any longer it will never dry even if rainfall returns to normal. As it is I left some pretty nasty muddy tire stripes. Luckily I didn't dig any trenches.

Been to wet for my neighbor to get his or my field done. He got one small field done, but his big field is next and then mine is last so I wait.

They have been making hay in Wisconsin in my area for the past week. Hay is just at the correct age. My uncle sells hay made square bale style, He should have first crop baled with no rain on it. Many of the old dairy farmers are now just making crops to sell and are all done with cows. It is the end of an era for Wisconsin's family dairy farm.

Sadly it is the same here. Many of the farmers I have gotten my hay from are former dairy farmers. The farmer I have been using for about the past year has about 60 cows and sells some hay on the side. Mostly, it seems to me.

I just happened to be driving by and stopped to inquire about hay. He said he really wasn't in the business of selling hay but did sell some here and there. Since then I go by about every other week and get about 50 bales in the bed of my truck.

Not sure if the following story will help but here it goes....

When I was buying my F350 the sales dude had a rich semi
retired lawyer who was going to be a "farmer/rancher." He
was buying a F650 SuperCruzer or whatever it was called.
High dollar truck not matter it name but it had a crew cab,
leather seats and a DVD player for the kids in back. Now the
"farmer" was not going to be pulling a big RV trailers but he
was going to haul goats. He was going to raise meat goats
in NC, load 'em into the F650 to take to PA. The goat
market was supposed to good up there. On the way back he
was going to load the 650 up with hay for the goats left in
NC...

If you need hay maybe there is a way to get some from PA?

Most of the diary farmers near my are out of the business.
My wifes family closed the dairy decades ago. The farm I see
all the time raises a few head of cattle. He used to be a
dairy. I know there was a big dairy "across" the street from
me since I can still see the big silo. The farm I drive by has
not even cut his hay since its been so wet.....
