There have been several threads on this subject. Might try searching the archives. There are more things to consider too, such as insurance, taxes, etc...

Re: Whats\'s the going rate??

I sometimes do brush hog work and I charge $50/hour. It is cheaper for someone that doesn't own a tractor and it is cheaper for them than renting a tractor/rotary cutter.

I figure my time is worth at least $15/hr, and the tractor/RC worth $35/hr. I only do it if I drive my own outfit.

If I want to do it for a favor, then I can cut it back.

I would not charge any less, for sure, if I had a tiller. Nor would I charge for hauling to their site, and only charge for the time I am there.

However, keep in mind that I am not looking for 'business', so that may be reflected in the charge rate. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think a combination of all.

I have tried to make it easy and usually figure 65.00/hr. I take distance into account and sometime says 85.00 for a garden for example to pay for fuel. I have not run into anything I can not till in one to two hours.

Please keep in mind while these are great machines which can make a job easy man they can do some damage. I often start the tilling conversation by saying first if I hit a great deal of rock(A lot and big) I may call it a day as I do not want to ruin my equipment and waste the customers money. Rock also means time off the tractor(manual labor)and money out of their pockets.

Second I asked them where their phone line, water line, cable, satelitte cables are and that I can not be responsible for them. You would be amazed at how many people do not know where all of this is or how many time I have seen the cable wrap around the tiller /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Not meant to discourage you but just to offer some heads up.

Here is a great thread and your in the right place for advice.

Just FYI...just because you ask where the utlities are doesn't release you from responsibility. If you HAVEN'T called before you dig, till, etc and had the utilities located and you hit them....YOU WILL be held responsible for ANY costs incurred. This includes manpower hours, equipment, wire/pipe, and even Fire department hazmat costs if it is a gas line.

Re: Whats\'s the going rate??

Sarge, You should listen to Scooby there can be lots of liability. My solution for neighbors, i.e. anyone within tractor driving range, is a version of the barter system. I do what they need done with the tractor and then call on them to help me when I can use an extra hand or three for a manpower intensive task. So far no one has abused the "system" and it has been mutually beneficial. I don't know if lawyers would agree, however, I feel I skirt the liability and insurance issues by "doing favors" rather than accepting cash.

Re: Whats\'s the going rate??

Good thoughts by all. I never gave the liability issues a real consideration, but definetly something to consider when dealing with the unknowns of a job.

Thanks all
