On my 1610, the rear wheels can apparently be remounted to the rims to widen the rear wheel base by about 6 inches. I noticed sometims the rear lift arms rub the tire lugs when pulling the mower around corners. Is there any down side to widening the rear wheel base, more than the front?

No down side, unless your plowing a field and want the front and back to track in the same furrow. It will give you more stability on hills to have the back wheels wider. I have my back wheels wide.

You can remount the front also but they don’t go out as wide as the back. I don't see a reason to widen the front. Unless you want them closer to the same track.
