... my mechanic friend in Tennessee called this morning to tell me the new higher-torque 22.7ci CharLynn wheel motors are all installed on the PT425 and he's ready to deliver it back to a different friend who stores it for me...

He doesn't have lot of PT-seat time, so he couldn't describe in much detail his impressions of the difference the upgrade made. He did state that the torque increase is pretty dramatic, both starting and stopping, but couldn't comment really on the "top end" speed. His garage is on top a hill with a pretty steep driveway, and he said he could start and stop on the steepest part at 1/2 throttle or so, whereas to climb it before he had to use full throttle and putz with the treadle position to get it to climb it. His initial impression is that they met my "goal" of twice the torque and half the speed.

I'll get much more feedback on them in use from my other friend where it's stored -- he'll be using it and the grapple bucket to move brush over the next few days. Plus I'll be down there in a little over a week and get to use it for a few days myself. More details and pics to follow... :)

He said it took him somewhere around 12 hours or so to install them, including one parts run. Other than grinding out the tub opening by about 1/4" to get them in, he found two differences in the 1" tapered shafts: (1) the CharLynn's 1" tapered shaft is longer than the original White RS motors and he had to add a stack of washers between the hubs and the castellated retaining nut, and (2) the half-moon (Woodruff, I think they're called?) keys on the CharLynn shafts were slightly (1/16" or less) thicker than the bar-type keys on the original White motors. He had to grind a slight "step" into those new keys. The biggest hassle he had was grinding out the openings in the tub -- he used six of the 4" cutoff tool discs enlarging the opening. The rears were more a challenge than the front because he couldn't easily access them from the backside, only the outside, down through the mounting boxes for the wheel motors.... Tedious and time-consuming but not a technical challenge at all.

Just as a reminder, I special ordered the CharLynn motors to add the optional low-speed valving, high-pressure seals, and 1/2" NPT hose connections. These are not the "off-the-shelf" motors like Surplus Center has -- those have straight (not tapered) shafts any way. My initial recommendation, based on these first impressions, would be to not go all the way up to the 22.7ci if you're going to be doing much lawn mowing -- they may be too slow for that primary use. You may want to go no larger than the CharLynn 18.2ci S-series ones for that purpose. Other than using the brush cutter on my hillsides to keep the lot cleaned up until the house it built, I don't plan on mowing with it, and "slope capability" at less than full throttle was much more important than speed to me... Your mileage (and needs) may vary.

My driving impressions, plus a few pics, coming in a couple of weeks...

Congratulations! I'll be interested to read how they perform, and whether (when?) tire traction becomes an issue.

How steep are the slopes that you are trying to cut brush on?

All the best,

Peter

I'm guessing 15-20 degrees, on average, with one spot even steeper -- I want to see if I can safely get the PT on it to cut down on a 1/2 day of using the string-trimmer...

I don't have an inclinometer, and haven't tried other measurements other than when shooting the corner stakes for the house location -- 11'2" fall in 82 feet (back end of garage to edge of front porch) and that's on the FLATTEST spot where the house will go.

You can see more photos of the property and links to movies of the PT struggling with the slopes (with the brush-cutter running) at this link:

Well, the preliminary feedback from my friend, Tiny, who stores it was mixed:

1. Good news is that he thinks the upgrade accomplished exactly what I wanted to... :)

2. The bad news is that he said I wasn't getting my PT back until they settled his last will and testament...

I told him that I'd continue to share, but not to get greedy... :p :D

Seriously, he said he could successfully climb any slope at 2/3 to 3/4 throttle that he'd feel safe putting the machine on. He tested it by driving up to the edge of the undergrowth on the steepest slope at the right, pictured here:

Over the last couple years, he's been using the minihoe (with thumb) to pull out these "wild" hedges that have overgrown his woods, like this:

He'd cleared as far up on the slope as the PT could climb and reach, and now says that he'll be able to go anywhere he'd feel safe taking the machine...

Sounds like you got what you set out to accomplish....but isn't the real test how much better it will climb when the fluids are hot and perhaps with the PTO running(like a mower)?

Yes, that is the real test, which I'll do week after next... :)

The difference there is that I mow at full throttle, getting all the power the 25HP Kohler will give me.... For mowing, I ALWAYS use full throttle - that's the only PTO powered implements I have (no tiller, stump-grinder, etc).

However, I prefer not running at quite full throttle (3/4 or a bit more) when doing loader work and using the mini-hoe. It saves gas, keeps the noise down, and most of all, it seems to be the "sweet spot" on the hydraulic controls -- quick and smooth, but not too fast and jerky. I do make sure to NEVER lug the engine though, when operating at less than full throttle.

It sounds like you will be antsy for the next few days. :D

Yep, probably not quite as bad as waiting on initial delivery, but close to it... ;)

Combine that with a case of cabin fever from a long winter and I sooooo look forward to a few days playing in the woods and the dirt...

Sorry to be so obvious...

Yeah, I haven't driven mine for close to two months. No snow and the grass isn't growing yet. Buds are just starting on the bushes and trees, so it won't be long now. :)

Congradulations. You did a good job of selecting the new motors. Sounds like the PT429 would be a good choice for your application.
