Man, does that look familiar. Thanks for giving some folks a picture of what I tried to describe by sound effects.
It sure is nice to fix a problem without costing a cent.

Thank you all very much.
I have just finished tighting the bolts that lock the flange to the axle. I have been hearing this noise since the tractor reached 60 hrs. It now has 165 hrs. I asked my dealer about it and was told it was nothing to worry about. Both bolts were so loose you could wiggle the flanges.
Again Thank You for the information.

I recently tightened my right rear after it began making the "ernt, ernt" noise again (great description). The noise persisted. Tonight I was going to have another crack at it, and noticed that although the nut was really tight, the wedges weren't tight on the axle. They appear to have plenty of clearance between them (so as not to be tightened together before gripping the axle). I apparently overtightened it to the point the threads were galled on the bolt, and I had to cut the nut to get it off. Fortunately, the dealer answered the phone, and had a new nut/bolt in stock. A mechanic was working late prepping a tractor, so the counterman gave me a "c'mon down". I checked the left rear hub, and all is well.

I thought of something I should have done AFTER getting it back together. The wedges fit rather snugly in the large hole of the axle. Next time it begins making that noise, it may be beneficial to clean the wedges and the hole they fit in, then grease them up so they don't bind against the hole in the hub as they are tightened.

Any thoughts?.........................chim

That's what I did this last time. I think I am going to put this on my every 100 hour maintenance list.

Chim,

That is exactly what the dealer told me to do. Apparently what happens is the paint wears and then the noise starts. It is a good idea to clean (or remove paint) first before tightening.
