Next time you change the oil go to the local hardware and get yourself a pipe nipple. Get one long enough so that it extends out over the chassis just a little bit and put a cap on the end. You will find that the drain plug hole is the standard NPT so the pipe nipple will screw right in.

Or just do as the small engine repair dudes do and take out the filler cap/dipstick and tip it over. It requires a bit bigger pan because it's hard to aim.

Spence, some of the small tecumsah and Briggs engines do not have an oil drain plug it appears. The oil is drained by turning the unit over on it's side and out the dip stick hole--it is messy. I have a 6 horse Ranch King. It is not perfect but it does an excellent job along fences and stuff. I still use my weedwhackers though. It is Briggs powered, runs decent and starts good but it is hard to take an engine serious when it has no drain plug--kinda indicates "throwaway" mentality. J

TresCrows, that may be true but fractal said he had a drain plug so I was just giving him a tip on that. My Ariens wheeled trimmer doesn't have a visible drain plug. I had to take the whole engine and the plate that it was mounted to off of the wheeled trimmer assembly and underneath that plate there was a drain plug.

Spencer, you could be entirely correct, I have not looked so close and yes he did /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
Well, while I am posting pics here is one of my now 2 yo (?) Swisher brand Ranch King I mentioned in the earlier post.

I was a little bit surprised that my new Toro mower (Briggs 6.5 hp Quantum) did not have a drain plug. Turn it over and drain out the filler is the way to change the oil. It was my first experience with that.

Yeah, My Ranch King has the Briggs 6/6.5 horse Quantum engine and I swear I don't see a drain plug. Kinda weird huh? J

My 6 hp Briggs on the DR trimmer/mower had a drain plug (just stick a 3/8" drive ratchet or extension into it), but if I remember right the manual suggested changing oil that way or drain the gasoline out, then turn it over to drain the oil out the fill tube. I didn't know they'd started making them with no drain plug, but from looking at some other ones on the Internet, looks like that's what the future (and some present models) will be. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

It is going to be unusual to run the mower empty on gas to change the oil. I guess I will have to plan my oil changes to coincide with my mowing, as I don't care for the idea of draining gas out when I wantto change the oil.

Me neither.
