Yes the ever popular downsize the amount but keep the price the same. It is amazing that most people do not recognize that as a price increase.

This is why they use the old (same size) packaging and price and just change out the weights. Few people check the weight, so if it is a 50lb sized bag, but only has 45 or 47 pounds in it, the consumer won't notice unless/until the price they are used to paying changes.

I know the birdseed we used to buy in 50# bags now comes in 40# bags, and fertilizer the same. Coffee has made the same transition...the old containers are about 2 Inches taller than what we buy now. Never checked the weight, but am willing to bet it went down too.

This is so true. Case in point. Baby aspirin.I take daily. well wally world sells a three package for the lowest cost....BUT when I get home I open two out of the three and add them to the one ,,,and then also add any I already had on hand to it. And it still isnt a full bottle. What a waste of packaging ..fuel etc to transport.

My favorite is when you compare unit pricing, some of the larger packaging is more expensive per unit. Folks have in their minds that buying in bulk or larger quantity is less expensive and don't check unit price.

That's not necessarily true, especially on something so small and light weight. Might be cheaper to make the bottles all one size than to make a bunch of different sizes. Economy of scale not only in making the bottle and packaging but also filling them. Plus if the bottle were small enough that the pills would fill them up then consumers might find it difficult to grip to open, then they lose market share because of that. Probably the biggest disadvantage here is the storage cost and opportunity cost of the wasted shelf space.

Anybody remember back when the size of paper towel rolls remained the same but the size per sheet was about 1/3 larger (square to rectangular)? Basically raised the price per use by 1/3. I complained but got nowhere. I beat them at their own game, I would cut each sheet in half, which was about all that was needed in most cases anyhow. Grab a full sheet if the job called for it.

Still doing that to use up the stock I bought way back in the 80s. I am aware that they now have the new "choice" with each sheet perforated to make two if one wants.

Around here little snack packs of pudding were 4 4OZ cup for a buck. Now they are 4 3.25ozs for a buck. Do you thing that extra .75 oz was to filling?
