When are pears ripe?

/ When are pears ripe? #11
Pears are ripe when the flesh gives slightly near the stem, and you can easily smell the fruit. The body should still be firm, but not hard.

I think pears are the second-best fruit we grow in the continental US. Good stuff.

And, as pointed out, they can be used as the base for some pretty good hooch, and isn't that what fruit was really designed for?

it also depends on the TYPE of pear that you have as to how long they take to ripen as well as how long they are GOOD for once they start to ripen. I have several of the harder fruit type ones as mine are always so hard you can hardly bite into them when still on the tree. after setting 3~10 days they ripen very fast then go bad just about as fast for me... I'm not sure on how many varrities there are but I have not found the type we had as a kid that were so good. they ripened on the tree were yellow by aug/early sept as we were eating them in summer time before school started, though ya had to watch out for the yellow jackets too they loved them as well!
