I have a 3510 that gets serviced every 100 hours on the engine oil. I usually change oil in the spring of the year. By winter, I usually have 100ish hours on the oil. My question is, should I change the oil in the winter and let the fresh oil sit there till spring, or let the old oil sit in the tractor and change it in the spring??
Does it hurt for that oil to sit there idle during the winter? I use the tractor in winter to load up the wood pile but it does not get run much.

I change mine every 100 hours no matter what the season is when it hits the numbers.

Ask a hundred guys, get a hundred answers. Everyone has their own ideas.

Here's mine. I want clean oil in the winter. Winter is hard enough on equipment without cold starting with sludgey, dirty oil, to coin a phrase.

Nice autumn day, sun is shining, 55 degrees! Priceless. Cost of the change, which is inevitable anyhow? Less than $30. I also like synthetic 5w-40 Rotella just because it flows. I don't skimp on the filter either. That's just my $.02

A hundred hours on oil, ok!! I even let oil go over 100. The mystery to me; The 3510 & 4110 operators manual says, Oil filter "Change every 400 hours" under normal conditions. I lean toward thinking the oil filter might be even more important to change more often than the oil is. Maybe the manual is refering to a different oil filter??

Cheers

Ah.... 400 hours on engine oil/filter? It would be absolute liquid tar!!!! Manuals are printed material and are often filled with errors, translation errors and outdated information. The costs for printing are so high, thus, this info is often super-ceded. I know of no manufacturer who recommends 400 hours on the oil and filter. Some might allow a few hundred hours on the Hydro or trans fluid/filter, after initial change, but even that is pushing it.

Suggest a call to a dealer for confirmation on that. Best Wishes

I use Delo 15w40 and a Napa Gold oil filter. Also I use a Napa Gold Fuel filter. The Air [inner and outer] and the hydr come from Mahindra since I can not find a Napa cross for these.
I assume the Napa gold is not considered a "cheap" filter??

I am going to change the oil now I guess. I just though sitting there this winter may get some condensation in the oil.
Thanks for the opinions.

My 80HP Perkins in my Cat SS calls for 500 hr oil and filter changes..these machines get run hard, and in extreme conditions daily. They also rev to 2600+ constantly unlike an 80hp tractor which turns 300-500RPM slower in most cases.I think its a little excessive, ive got 125 hrs on the oil,and it still looks like the day i changed it a yr ago, still golden brown on the stick,my Ford 1910s oil is dirtier to the eye 1 minute after an oil change.....than the cat is at 125+hrs...
My Dixie Choppers 3TN84 turbo calls for 250hr oil changes, and its a 2005I change once a season (about 100-125hrs) ,and its black as coal.It also revs to 3000RPM,and I run it around 3/4 to full throttle as its a mower, and needs the blade speed near full throttle. From what Ive seen newer ,slow turning diesels having a 250-500 hr OCI is pretty common.

Thanks for the good information. I gotta believe an estate type tractor, used the way they are, is why manufacturers typically call for a change at 50 hours and each 100 maximum thereafter. This is true of Kubota and Deere anyhow.

i'll add in my question here instead of starting a new thread. what are your opinions on filters (oil and air)? stick w/ mahindra or ??? i have a 3510 also and need to do an oil change. i don't have a manual, can anybody tell me how much oil i'll need.

TIA.

For filters, both air and oil, see if your local NAPA can cross reference for you. Sometimes you can also cross reference right on the WIX website as well. Tractor Supply Stores sometimes have a FRAM book with all the applications for tractors as well. How you might feel about a Fram is another question, as many guys prefer something better such as a Wix or Wix made for NAPA. You cannot go wrong with these filters and you will save a wad of cash.

As for oil capacity, it isn't difficult. You know it is going to take 3 quarts, so begin with that. Slowly add the 4th quart, a bit at a time. Check the dipstick often. It's that simple. Buy 5 or 6 quarts, although it might not take all of 6 quarts. That way, you are sure to have enough.

Once full, run the engine for 5 minutes. Shut down, allow to settle and check oil level again. Top off as needed. You can be sure the filter is full this way.

The first oil change I did was at 50 hours. Now I change the oil after every 100 hours. I use WIX for my oil filter and whatever other brand for the other filters that I can cross reference. Quite a bit in cost difference when compared with the Mahindra brand.

Just how expensive are the Mahindra filters? I am fast approaching my first oil change and was planning to use Mahindra filters but have not priced them.

buck12, dealers charge 2 and 3 times for their tractor branded filters. Keep in mind that no tractor manufacturer makes these filters. They buy them from a filter manufacturer. And NO! Using a another quality filter will not void one's warranty. US law specifically states that if an engine manufacturer insists upon you using their oil or their filters, then they have to provide them free of charge to you, the customer. Of course, they aren't going to do that. It goes without saying that no manufacturer also produces their own oil either. They aren't oil companies and aren't filter manufacturers.

Thanks bpflick. Does anyone have the WIX # (oil filter) for a 2615? I would hate to take the filter off to cross reference and the parts store have to order it.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. (Most folks, who I deal with daily, agree that I am real good at confusing things.)

The manual calls for an oil change every 100 hours. The manual calls for a filter change every 400 hrs. I was just wondering if right. However, I changed today at 110 hrs and I always change filter with oil at 100 hrs. The extra cost of filter is cheap compared to oil and time already invested. I use NAPA filter.

Your right about oil. I changed at 110 and it looked like tar.

Good for you. 100 hours on an estate tractor is long enough. The oil capacity is small, only 3-4 quarts typically. We also run them for shorter bursts of time than a commercial machine running steady for 12 hours. Also, There's no point in draining oil and not changing the filter. NAPA is a good source for Wix rebranded, so I am told and likely a place I will get mine in the future.

My Mahindra 4110 takes the better part of two gallons to change. I use the NAPA gold (the Wix made filter), or the Pure One oil filters.

It never made sense to me why manufacturers call for an oil change without also changing the filter. You get no cheaper engine protection than regular oil changes.

Your 41 hp Mahindra has a very large oil capacity. The typical scut takes only 4 qts. A larger capacity is a good thing. Still, the principle remains. I never got that leaving the filthy filter on "thing" either. Especially since it holds a pint of polluted oil. For the $8-10 cost of a filter on a $15000 tractor, it doesn't make any sense. To each his own.

Oil and filters are cheap compared to rebuilding or replacing an engine. Change it every 50 hours, what do you have to lose, it's only money.
