zzvyb6 - Everything you said makes sense. I keep a real short hitch to reduce front end lifting. 1,000 pounds of tongue weight is not noticable with my hitch. I have thought about surge brakes and still might add some.
The load is about 2 cords of mixed green hard wood. I was figuring 4,000 pounds per cord plus 3,000 for the trailer.

I've had too many situations where I thought the factory ROPS would not be enough had something gone bad. You can't really see the whole FOPS because I threw a piece of plastic up there because of a sleet storm I was plowing in but the top is all expanded metal which I really like for seeing what's going on above me in the woods.
