When is it too cold to pave a driveway?

I can remember working a hand loop many times and getting essentially a sunburn from radiant heat of that 450' asphalt rolling out the back of a truck and whatnot.

And ain't it fun when the trucker manages to dump a load just in front of the Paver Hopper!

Had that happen and that seriously sucks!!! :laughing: I can laugh about it now but man what a mess that was.

You all haven't lived till you pour extra hot asphalt down the inside of the front of your pants.

I was a young buck then and was shoveling hot asphalt up and over a fence. The shovel tipped and the hot lava dropped inside my pants. I got the cold water out and doused it but it was too late all the sand and rocks were embedded into my skin. Now I had to pull all those hot stones out while the wound was fresh.

Worst day of my life. Didn't help the boss was a jerk and would frequently drop 8 ton of 2" rock in one pile and make us hand spread it instead of dropping small piles down the drive way.

Young and dumb.

Closest I ever got to that was a small spill on the back of my hand and that was bad enough. That would sure give a person the meaning of the words "Pants On Fire", Ouch !!!

That boss sounds like a he was a slave driver. If we hand spread asphalt like your talking about my boss was always decent enough to dump piles close together so we wouldn't have to work our butts off. That's down right cruel considering how hot of a job paving is. I don't think I would have stayed working with a boss like that. Either he didn't know what the heck he was doing or he was just a inconsiderate S-O-B. IMO of course.

My understanding is moisture is just a big an element as temperature. The stone needs to have a pretty low moisture content before being mixed with the asphalt. If it is too high it could require drying before mixing and that gets cost prohibitive real fast. This is a big factor as to when the plants shutdown for winter.

Not to worry, the asphalt plant just takes longer to get up to temperature and the thru put will be lower!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Problem solved...had a stretch of 60+ days and the driveway is complete...now my teeth don't get rattled driving up.

We had to miss it this year. I heard it was good...as usual. Some really great artists in this area.

We go every year; great show. We had lunch at The BBQ Hut on the five lane...I forgot how big those hamburgers were:licking::laughing:

Maybe next year we could meet at the show and introduce ourselfs.
