When is your last grass mowing of the season?

I have a lot of leaves, so I mow and mulch maybe once a month until all the leaves are pretty much gone. Our grass doesn't start growing again until late April or later, but I like to mow once more in January, and set my mower a half inch lower, same in February, march and April. That way I effectively "Scalp" my yard in increments, mulch the scalpings and don't have a big mess in April with all the dead grass on the yard to blow and track into the house...besides....


....I think the longer grass helps protect against freeze damage during January and February.

Longer grass for the winter makes sense and it works for alfalfa. Anyone have more experience in longer grass for the winter? I'm sure tired of mowing.

I think I might have one more mowing to do here in sand lake mi. I mowed the front yard last Saturday and ran out of gas before I did and more. Hhmm. I wonder about the long grass thing? ?

You don't specify which "season"--Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. We pretty much mow all year. There's some slack time if there hasn't been any rain but the dang weeds will grow on nothing but air, it seems. I haven't cut the lower field in a couple of months but we're up to 3" of rain today already so I expect to be mowing sometime during the week and probably the yard area after that. With this much rain, I'll probably have to mow the yard again next week. Then at least along the driveway the week after that. Like I said, it never really ends over the course of a year--Just some break points during the seasons.

Around here it has been my experience if the grass is to long and it snows, it can mold and get winter kill. So, we cut once a week dropping the deck being careful to not take to much off. Then in the spring we slowly raise it, keeping the amount we cut off consistent. The short grass allows the leaves to blow across. I will try to cut and mulch until the leaves are all down, this year it has been unusually warm so a lot of leaves are still on the trees. I am going to be done last week in October with the grass cutting. As I want to get aeration in and an application of slow release fertilizer. Then in the spring we thatch, once the ground get to 50 degrees we hit, it with the weed killer grab grass preventive, Then August with another application of weed killer. More info the OP requested, but I was on a roll.

I mow year round when it appears to need it; just less frequently in the winter months. It may partially depend on how wet it is. This year (2015 calendar year), I mowed 2 times in Jan., 3 in Feb., 5 in Mar., 3 in Apr., 4 in May, 8 in Jun., 6 in Jul., 4 each in Aug. & Sept., and 2 in Oct, including 2 days ago - the 22nd - before the rain started.

I try not to mow December thru March. Sometimes my last mowing will fall the first week of December and first mowing the last week of March. The rest of the year I only try to mow every 10 days. During July to October this can drop to once every month or three. Weather dependent.

Grasses store all their winter reserves above ground in the leaves. So leaving grasses 3-4 inches tall for the winter helps ensure that they have enough reserves to make the winter. Grasses at this height shouldn't mold. Also mowing in this height range helps cut down weed competition by shading the ground.

Wow September? I have always had cuts well into October and some years run get to run the mower around in November

Last weekend was the first killer frost this season and one again last night

Right now hard to say if I'm cutting lawn or just leaves :confused2:

Usually early October. First mow is usually in April in the spring.
