When the Town Finds Out You Have a Tractor

It's becoming more and more apparent that we have a pretty good group of people gathered here in this little space of the virtual world. It's good to know that we're not alone.

I grew up outside a small town, spent 40 years in cities and then retired outside an even smaller town. I maintain that if you keep giving, expecting nothing in return, pretty soon everyone around you is doing the same thing. Amazes me sometimes the folks you draw into this process.

When I was a kid and it snowed, my dad would take me out on the old 8N with a blade and plow neighbor's driveways for free and fun. He never took a thing for it. I grew up thinking this was the way it's done and have carried on the tradition since that time - almost forty years now.

Don't see any reason to quit now...... Only thing that's changed is the color of the tractor and the (now) old fart driving it

I dunno, I have a neighbor who lost her husband, so I cleared the brush off their leachfield as a favor, her husband was good to my family. My kids use it at their new house. We got the tractor as an extension,of our business, and a way for wife to make money. For actual customers we charge. Maintence, fuel, insurance, wear and tear and the monthly payment can add up. If you can personally afford to do favors,I say go for it. I have bartered in the past, but had bad experiences or poor work done in return. I have had friends who wouldn't respond when I needed something, but most friends are dependable. plowking
