I feel good helping out. I'm the kid in my neighbor hood. I'm 63. I do get a lot of pie or fresh rolls. I don't need them but I do like them. That was the reason I got the snow blower for my tractor. I could have done mine easy with the loader.

I have had a few neighbors and friends ask for a little tractor work now and then offering to pay me for the work. I have never charged anybody for the work I've done, most times it takes less than a couple hours to do what they want. There is a feeling of satisfaction that money can't match when you give some one a hand like that.

However, I have one neighbor right across the road, which is dirt, that has a dirt driveway that goes uphill. When we get a heavy rain the driveway washes out into the road. After I got my tractor and york rake I thought I would put the driveway back after a rain storm. They were very happy that I did this so when I would see the driveway needed some attention I would groom it a little.

However, after four years of helping them out now they expect me to touch it up when it needs it. I don't mind doing this but my wife gets on my case now when she sees me doing this because she thinks they are taking advantage of the situation. This can take some of the enjoyment out of helping a neighbor and getting a little seat time.

Iplayfarmer, good for you and it is always good to get seat time. All of the rewards come with satisfaction in a job well done.

About I'll accept is a handshake and a promise to pass it on when someone else needs a hand. You never know when it might be you on the receiving end, even though I suspect most of the posters here have a hard time accepting help.

I know I would much rather do things myself whenever possible. That probably has something to do with having a creaky back, shoulder, knee, etc.

That probably explains for most of us why we even have tractors to begin with...We want the ability and resource to do what we want for ourselves.

That's great to hear that people are still doing nice gestures for their neighbors without expecting anything in return! We need a lot more people like yourself these days!

I'm still not even close to being even.

I had a guy from Zaire tell me once that you can never divide the work equally. It's mathematically impossible. Someone is always going to have a little more work than everyone else. He then told me "I chose to be the one doing the little more work".

I have since learned that if I'm keeping track, then I'm definately not the one doing the little bit more.

AMEN!

It's the same in a good marriage. Don't keep score. It isn't competition.

I've done quite a bit of winter plowing for the neighbor next door. He spends a lot of time away for work and his significant other is home alone. I enjoy the seat time and unless it is colder than -25C I don't mind being out there for the extra time it takes to plow their place.

They've been very kind in return and kept our family well supplied with cookies and squares :D The kids love it. Daddy plows....they get to eat cookies.
