Yes, that is an interesting graphical way to present that data. Thanks for sharing.
From Franklin County, ME the usual pattern - south to southern Maine or Mass.

I wonder how/if young adults are represented, like a person who finishes college and moves far away from home.
Dave.

Dave,

I'm not sure how they are handled, but Montgomery County, VA (Virginia Tech) and Pickens County, SC (Clemson) show out-migration to some far flung destinations. Because the data come from the IRS, I would guess that students who filed their federal taxes in their respective college locations (mainly graduate students) are reflected in the data.

Detroit is a sad case for sure. Just saw they are closing 32 school buildings as of the end of this school year. They are also abandoning whole city residential areas. Only a few residents left in them and the city can't afford to provide services to that scattered few.

I see no reason on the horizon for cites like Detroit to return to their former selves one day.

Detroit will be the next Pittsburgh or Green Point Brooklyn Dave. Give it a decade or so.

Well, maybe Chris. I'm not sure if Pittsburgh ever went as low as Detroit is going. You can revive a city around the Steelers - Detroit Lions ?

It's not just Detroit, it's all of Michigan. Manufacturing is pretty much dead. The manufacturing jobs are still going down, employment is expected to continue declining until 2015. I really don't see any reason for improvement anytime soon. And that 2015 number might be optimistic!!!!!
