Can you suggest sources of right-angle gearboxes for me to shop? I am looking for snowblower parts now, in preparation to build a blower in a month or so. I need a box of ratio 1:2 or 2:1, 90 degree, 2000 RPM input, 15HP max.
I will also be needing to put together at least one, and possibly two, PTO shafts with U-joints. Any suggestions for these parts will also be appreciated. Thanks!

Tr7 Surplus Center 1-800-488-3407. They don't have a web site. Pages 6 & 7 of their current catalog has gear boxes and reducers.

Granger seems to "have it all." Do a search for their site for an on-line catalog. You can also order a paper catalog on line. It also comes with a CD. It is excellent.

You may have to go to an industrial supplier in your area for a gear box of that size. There are three companies I know that make gear reducers, Morse, LinkBelt, and Dodge. I am sure there are others but when you get into the 15 HP size the choices are fewer and more expensive.

You should be able to find all the PTO shaft parts you want at your local tractor dealer or the Tractor Supply Company. Good luck.

jimgerken,

Keep in mind a 2:1 increaser will be a lot more expensive and heavy than a 1:2 reducer. You should be able to find a lot of 1:2 reducers in the 15hp range from all the sources mentioned.

Good luck,
Michael

I blew that part of my post where I wrote 1:2 or 2:1 reducer. I meant to say 1:1, or 2:1 reducer (input 2000, output 1000). Reduction is an option because there will also be a chain drive in the system. So, I can reduce in the box or on the chain, either way.

Thanks for the tips guys, I will check some of this out.

Try a tractor wrecking yard, or a scrap metal yad in the piddly little ones we have here theres plenty of them. Try looking for some industrial mowers they have lots of right angle boxes.

You can often find reduction gearboxes on ebay at good prices. They are usually pretty expensive if you buy them from the industrial suppliers.

I saw in your profile that you are from Minnesota-- a good farm state-- ckeck the implement dealers to see if they might have an old grain auger with a gearbox on it that you might be able to buy at junk price!! Pull the gearbox off, and haul the rest to the scrapyard-- could save you some bucks!! Could also try some farmers; you never know what they might have out in the back 40!!
