Where can I find right-angle gearboxes?

I wonder about an automotive differential? Strip off the axel housing & you have your shaft. Also could use drive shaft.

WOW! You guys are full of good ideas. I will check some of these out. I am going to an industrial scrapyard later this week, I already checked at a local scrapyard, I am leaning toward a helical gear unit to handle the 2000 RPM speed but completly forgot about old grain auger boxes, and I like the auto differential idea too, will think about it. Thanks a bunch guys, somebody once said:

Automotive differentials: Assuming it is a standard diff, not a limited slip, if I pin one axle output shaft so it can't turn, does the other axle shaft spin twice as fast? Is it OK to run a differential in this mode for extended periods of time, assuming normal lubrication is present?
Thoughts: I find a 3:1 -- 3.8:1 differential, feed it 2000 rpm input, pin one axle so the other spins twice as fast, and fine tune the final rotor speed on my snowblower project with the chain and sprockets final drive.

Yes, if you lock up one side, you can use it the way you want to. Back when we had this board on Yqahoo, I posted how to use one to make a post hole digger.
Many chain trenchers use auto rear ends to power the digging chain.
In your application, the main consideration you need to make is installing a well calculated shear pin to protect the PTO.

Jim, There is a right angle gearbox on ebay #1770363533 starting at $8.00, has 1.25 shafts so its probably pretty strong. Not mine I just saw it.

I'm the guy who built one from a car rear end, complete with augur, if that's what you call a recipe.
There was a thread about doing it back just before Yahoo went from club to group, or whatever. I don't know if those threads can still be viewed.

you can purchase new right angle gearboxes at a good price from agri supply and ujoints and shafts. you can also purchase gear boxes, and componets from surplus center on the internet they are very reasonable on any thing they sell. hydraulics,lots of farm items.
