Open books for all that are members solves that issue.

We did have one instance where the money didn't add up, and the person in charge was "let go" (would of pressed criminal charges if it were up to me, but the minister "vetoed" me).

ANYTIME people donate money or do fundraising drives, it's the RIGHT of those people to know exactly what the funds they're raising is being used for IMO as well as an account balance.

Hold the church to the exact same standards.
Sponsoring org was american legion who did nothing. Local council said take it up with sponsoring org. Person wouldnt show the records...

Not in a very good Scout manor, I would tell them to stick what money I gave them up the arse and make good use of it because they would never get another penny from me again.

Financial transparency is a must to get quality membership IMO, particularly if you're looking for money.

Every four (I think) years we have a Jamboree that is hosted by different States, the cost is uniform no matter where you are so the travel costs for those on the wrong side of the country pay an affordable amount.
My youngest daughter attended one and there were Scouts from all over the country and from different countries, was well organised and a lot of activities for all to participate in so if you didn't want to have a shot at the climbing wall you could go basket weaving or whatever.
I can't remember the cost but it was about $500 for around 8-9 days, that included transport from anywhere in the country so if you lived 5000km away it cost the same as those who lived in the same host town.
It was a great opportunity to meet others from all around the country and overseas, as a Leader I attended for two days as did several others so we all had a chance to experience the event.
The only mishaps were sunburn and dehydration which were quickly address, no bad behaviour and no major accidents just the usual minor cuts and bruises.
Parents could attend at the weekend and it was well attended but as someone pointed out earlier for some it was a baby sitting exercise which was disappointing but that is going to happen anywhere.

Just as an aside, our disgusting little troop decided to give the girls a bit of a wind up, take one clean pair of underwear and smear vegemite inside then lick it off in front of the girls, our boys were really a class act:eek:

It is unfortunate but I think scouting (at least as we have known it) is at its end. I have been involved in scouting all my life (Eagle scout) and Scout Master, etc... I think is has been and is the money that will do it in. As has been mentioned the cost of scouting and especially the camps (the best part) are just too expensive for most and there is too much competition for kid's time and (parent's) money nowadays. As many churches step away from the program and sponsoring units the cost will necessarily have to increase to cover the program cost and the salaries of all the "professional" scouters and executives. More importantly all the free labor and upkeep that many of us have done over time will also decrease. I look to the scouting program to have to start to sell some of the camps to keep the program afloat as long as they can.

Something else that I learned from this thread, after googling the word. Like many Americans, the only time I heard "vegemite" was in a song from an Australian band... you know the one I mean. A friend told me that it was what we call a "knuckle sandwich"... for 30+ years I thought that's what it is.

Soapbox is a car that kids ride in. Pinewood Derby is what the scouts build.

Soapbox Derby started in Dayton, OH on the Huffman Ave. hill back in the early 30's. I used to take that road to and from work back in the 80's. Super steep!

Back to Scouts - my daughter's first Brownie troop had a leader that pilfered the kids' scout dues money. Class act. Their mother went to drop them off at a meeting at this lady's apartment and the lady (on public assistance) wasn't there - just the very creepy boyfriend. My wife stayed there with the kids - NO WAY was she leaving our kids there. Couldn't believe that other parents never bothered to even walk their kindergarten age kids up to the door of the apartment.

Thank you for clarifying that.

Vegemite is a yeast extract that has a consistency like axle grease, colour like tar and tastes like battery acid, very much a local thing and you have to be weaned on it to appreciate it, I wasn't born here and cannot stand the stuff, I put Coke in the same league as I don't like that either so attribute that to a local taste.
