That stuff that turns the dirt pile into mud whenever I need dry dirt from the pile for something.

How often do you need to grab dirt from the pile? If you need it weed free and dry all the time you can either tarp it like has been said or build a small building to store it in. I have tons of dirt piles and do not worry about weeds. All I do is when I need dirt I just dig the top layer off and dump it on the back side of the top and then the face I am digging into is weed free and dry. The weeds that I turn over become mulch and when the pile is small enough I combine it with one of my other piles and start over.

Speaking of dirt...does anyone have any creative ways to get free dirt? I could use a lot of dirt to build up parts of my yard and pasture, but the amounts I will need are way more than I can afford to pay for. I have gotten several loads of "free fill dirt", but you have to pay someone to deliver it. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions.

You could dig a hole next to the one you want to fill in and use the spoil from there to fill the other one in. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I burried a pile of dirt in the in the back yard . Every once in a while I take the BH and dig it up to make sure its still there!

Every body has a pile of free dirt - it may not be very high but it's plenty deep.

)</font>Not sure of how things work where you are but up here in the north country we just go see the local town road supervisor. They clean out the ditches yearly and will give the spoils to anyone that wants them. Talk to town. Also check with construction company's. They sometimes have trouble getting rid of spoils so you can make a good deal with them. Around here it is not to tough, sometimes just a clean fill wanted sign in the front yard works.

Good Luck

How about a sign on your property:

WANTED
CLEAN FILL

RipTide,

First, welcome to TBN!!

What nasdaqsam and PineRidge wrote has worked very well for me.

When I do get ditch scrapings from the town, it's normally pretty decent topsoil that has run-off. Yea, you need to pick a little garbage out but still worth it.

How much do you need to pay for fuel to get a truckload of "free" dirt? Around here, the going rate is around $25-$35 per 5-6 yard truckload.
