Where has my hydraulic fluid gone?

I don't have a log splitter as yet, but I have a brand new hedge trimmer with three cylinders and a hydraulic motor. After using it for the first time, I checked the hydraulic fluid level on the tractor. Couldn't believe it, had to pour in over 4 liters of oil to restore the normal level. They never came back ! Most of it must be in valves and lines. I bet it's very similar with a log splitter.

Again lads - appreciate the info ... I was hoping it was sitting in my splitter somewhere - and not sitting in a field somewhere that I didn't see. I'll refill and see what happens after that. Gotta love this forum!
