Where have you've been stopped for trailer violations and why?

Last time I got pulled was because I was pulling bundles of compressed used tires for a friend of mine he does motorsport events. He buys them for crash zones and such and apparently I need a waste tire permit. Just a warning and be safe type deal

We were "pulled over" outside Montreal Quebec because we were changing a flat tire on our trailer. Cop made us put away the spare and jack and wait an hour for a tow truck.

We we off the paved shoulder, past the gravel, and on the grass median, just past a long section of guardrail.

I was not a happy camper.

So why did he call a wrecker? What was the violation?

Sounds like a money grab to me.....Was the tow truck operator the LEO's BIL?

In this area they have inspectors that sit at a wide spot in the road they will pull over everyone, checking you lights, trailers they will look it over the loading, the brakes.
We have a scale down the road it is not manned, they sit there and if in doubt have the vehicle weighed. They do full vehicle inspections and they ticket every violation.
I have been stopped, and they took maybe 2 minutes and I was let threw, no problems.

Having out of province plates can be a problem in Quebec.

It has gotten a bit better than the old days (when my friends and I use to drink in rougher bars in Quebec, we were much less afraid of the bikers (don't get me wrong, they were serious dudes) than the QPP - the provincial police).

But yeah, that would have been a shake down. Corruption tends to be pretty blatant, even today - just google "Bridges Quebec" to see what the construction industry is like.

Great culture, fun people (student protests notwithstanding), but YMMV on specific situations like described above.

I got stopped by a state trooper once. I believe it was 1979 or 1980. I was on my way to the lake with my 15' bass boat and he stopped me because he noticed the trailer license plate had expired. In those days, the state mailed you a notice when your car or truck registration needed to be renewed, but they didn't do that for trailers, and I didn't even know that they didn't send them for trailers.

But in all my years of pulling 2 conventional and one fifth-wheel travel trailer and numerous utility trailers, I've never been stopped.

I'm thinking in the past you mentioned you were in law enforcement? If not ignore the rest as me being crazy... Did you pull the "Let me get my insurance out of the glove box"? So he could see your badge/gun and get off through LEO courtesy? :thumbsup:

I honestly don't know whether he would have written me a ticket if I hadn't been an officer. At any rate, he was the one who told me the state didn't send notices on trailer licenses like they do on cars. But that's changed now, too. I did get a notice in the mail for my little utility trailer this year. And of course if that state trooper had written me a ticket, I'd have just paid it because I should have known and remembered to renew the registration.:laughing:

And the sad part of that is your little utility trailer and mine as well cost's $60 to license, but my 24', 14K GN with farm plates costs like $14.
