My Branson 4220 i is about six months old. The first couple of months the fuel pumped clicked steadily when I switched on the ignition switch, and waited for the glow plug light to go out before starting. Then it quit doiung that after a couple of months, but the glow plug light came on and it started OK, and ran OK, so I kept using it. But yesterday, the morning was a lot cooler and it was sort of difficult to start, and chugged several seconds before smoothing out.

I checked the fuel pump by applying 12 VDC to it at the plug, and it worked just fine. I checked the fuse box, and the listed fuse for it appears OK. I disconnected each of 4 relays under the dash above my left foot, thinking bad connection, but no luck. Which is the fuel pump relay? Is it possible the glow plug light can come on, but not the glow plugs? Are the relays for the fuel pump and glow plugs one and the same?

I know its in warranty, but that is my last resort, as I have no trailer to haul it back to the dealer. They delivered it to me when I bought it, so it would be very difficult to take it back. Hopefully its something minor that I can fix myself. Perhaps someone here has the answer to which relay or what is the culprit. Or does the lack of hearing the fuel pump click at ignition switch turn on men anything at all?

Thanks in advance.

Couple of things here....others will chime in..

First..If its cold out..you can expect your tractor to chug a little till the cylinders warm up. Some advanced systems (not ours) cycle the glow plugs after it starts in order to smooth it out. Start putting in an additive like Power Service/Lucas or Stanadyne in order to help your pump out. The new diesel has very little in the lubrication department...you got to help your little injection pump. You can also add a manual glow switch to cycle the glows after she starts to smooth it out.

Second, just because you have power does not mean the pump is working. You need to put a pressure gage after the pump and verify it is providing pressure.

Will the machine work without the fuel pump??....YES.... depending on how hard you use, it will determine if you notice it. The injection pump will draw a vaccuum, however this is not great for the injection pump or performance.

My $.02 non-expert opinion

Hi Everybody -

I know this is an old post but I didn't see any resolution. My 3510 is showing the same symptoms. Over the weekend I was doing some brush hogging (for some late Michigan food plots) and everything was working fine. However I noticed that after turning the key the normal "clicking" of glow plugs and fuel pump was no longer there during starting. Since it still ran fine I just thought it was normal (I have very little diesel experience). However now it will just start and run real rough with no change to engine RPM with the throttle in any position. I disconnected the fuel hose between the pump and the filter and turned the key on and no fuel came out. I thought this meant that the fuel pump went bad. After reading around the posts, it sounds like some of the other "clicking" that is now absent was for the glow plugs also which sounds like the original relay assumption. Anyone have any ideas? As always, looking forward to hearing from all the posters here. This is a great website. Lastly, before killing any current food plots for replanting, make sure your tractor won't break leaving you with brown grass to hunt over for the year!

Hello Terry

Last fall my 4720i starting became harder as it got colder. I removed the four glow plugs and three were bad. I replaced all four and that corrected the hard starting. Hope that helps.
