I used to have a Chilton brand 5 gal diesel can, but it got lost during the move. All I can find now are those cheap worthless Blitz cans. I read somewhere that Blitz bought out Chilton. They don't make the good ones anymore. My Chilton one was fairly rectangular shaped so it wouldn't tip over and it had a separate vent hole with a cap. The Blitz ones are tall and narrow and tip over easy in the back of the pickup so they have to be strapped down, and they don't have a vent . The spout has a vent built into it, but it doesn't work very good and it takes a long time to pour. Does anybody know where to get a decent diesel fuel can?

You're up against the EPA rules now. The new cans are not vented. You can't buy that style anymore. I agree that they pour slower so you are going to have to decide whether you are willing to make your own vent hole and seal it up with a sheet metal screw or valve stem.

All of mine seem tippy but stay up in the back of my pickup. All of these modern cans are better than an old style steel jerry can in regards to tippage.

You can also look into a fuel storage container with an electric pump, they may be a bit more stable in the back of your truck and eliminate the "awkward to pour" issue. The only real down side of the diesel canister I got from Lowes is that the ring that's supposed to open the pour spout (a safety device) is exactly the same size as my filler opening so I have to be careful that it doesn't slip inside - but that is a pretty annoying downside. :(

hmmmm, i hated to buy the new ones too....

a few years back, i wondered why a couple of buddies kept trying to buy my older gas cans off of me........

the sheet metal screw might be a good idea.......is there anything else you fellas can think of that could be opened and closed?

When Chilton quit making the good plastic containers, I bought about 10 of them along with spare nozzles and gaskets. I was set up. Then Briggs and Stratton (just like the motors) started making them and I bought a couple more. Now you can't find them anywhere. Fortunately I am set and will buy one at a garage sale every once in a while.

I kind of like the No-Spill ones. They aren't too bad:

No-Spill non-CARB Gasoline cans

This is the style I have and with the gas cap on the fender and the grab handle next to it on the BX24, I find this is the only easy way to fuel up without making a mess out of the tractor. The trick is to make sure your finger / glove isn't blocking the vent part of the button you press to let the fuel flow.

I still may upgrade to something bigger with a pump when I get the shed done but this thing works okay for now.

The No-Spill cans are probably nice, but they sure are pricey. I pay too much for the fuel as it is, sure would like to find a can that's not so expensive.

while working landscaping last summer we used eagle metal gas cans (like this, very nice, but $45+ each).

on the add-a-vent to a normal can idea, I like the idea of valvestems as vents, something like this with the core removed, or like this, if you want to get fancy

to install I would drill a hole, drop a string with a weight through it and get it to come out of the filler neck, then hook the stem on and pull it through the hole.
