Just a hint from an old man... The grade 70 5/16 is a lot easier to handle than grade 43 3/8 chain.

Can anyone explain to me why I am not finding 10 footers for as cheap as we are finding 20 footers? Ive gotten a few but I seem to be paying the same or even a few dollars more for 10 foot than I can get 20 foot for. I just do not need 20 foot and do not wish to deal with the excess having to secure it. I've got my set up down to a science now and 10 footers are perfect. Guess it matters not now... as I am finished with my set up. But I ran into that when I was shopping. I had to pay almost $75 for two 10 footers. Yet could have gotten 20 footers for less.

By the way Rich, thanks for the link to the eBay seller. I don't need 20 footers for my current set up but at that price Im going to have two in my job box just in case I run into something I need them for. What the heck!

Why didn't you just buy 20ft chains and cut then in half?? Then put hooks on. That would have been the logical way to get them cheap

Partly because it becomes almost neutral in the end or close enough to not bother with several orders and cutting to get where I needed to get fairly fast. You of course then have to buy two more G70 5/16 grade clevis hooks (or 4 for two 20 footers to make 4 10's) at anywhere from $3-$5 (even more if real high grade) and your back almost where you were before shipping and part of my cost increase was shipping $8 shipping for two 10 footers became my reality that time.

Oddly enough I couldn't find a darn vendor at that point that had free shipping on their 10 foot chains so that accounts for part of my difference. The very same vendor I bought from had free shipping on his 20 footers! I also have no method to cut them handy either but that could be solved but I discounted doing that because it does take a little time to solve and deal with.

So the other oddity outside of the apparent discount on 20 footers that I ran into is that I found a lot free shipping on 20 foot chains at almost or slightly lower price per chain but none of them offering 10 footers that way and in fact many of them not even carrying 10 footers. That said... with my luck I'll find a ton of them now that I don't need any more chain! LOL...

Anyway I did order two of those 20 footers from eBay even though I don't need them that length now. Who knows if I will in the future. I have time now. My urgent need is over for the time being.

I'm convinced that 20 footers are the norm and come from China as such way more often than not. And so they arrive in mass cost effectiveness to allow a discount. Pretty much making the extra chain free or even less. Thats my theory at least.

But if one wanted a project and had the time, investigating cutting them down would be logical as you suggest

There is differences in quality that have to be taken into account but I cannot make that comparison on such a small sample. The one I got from my Amazon vendor turned out to be very nice. I cannot say about others. I do like the ratchet binders that came with them as well.
