You might try calling CSX. They are based in Jacksonville. Here is their Customer Service number 1 (877) 744-7279

By the way - thought I'd mention, I am about 20 miles the other side of Gainesville - towards the other end on 26

Anything that is too small to be usable by the RR's is put in the scrap pile and its usually less than a foot long. When a piece of track is replaced, Track Dept takes the old rail back with them and its usually in pieces that are longer than the crane truck. Nobody wants to be fired for giving away a small piece of rail.

Modern rail is 136 lbs per yard, so do the math, should you happen to come across a piece of abandoned rail on the right of way...

I get my RR ties at a RR Salvage company. They sell rails and all the hardware also, even switches. They cut stuff any length you want it for no extra. They buy up salvage from the RRs and from contractors doing RR work. They are the recyclers mentioned earlier. They are on the internet and the yellow pages here. Ship from up here for twice what it sells for. Last time I was there they even had had a couple old hand carts and a spike driving machine. Yeah they don't drive them by hand any more. In the old days I used rails once to build cattle guards at fence/road crossings for a rancher in AZ.

My thought is why use rail when other scrap is easier to find. I would pick the best shapes that could also brace and strengthen the implement rather than solely adding extra weight.

I thought that some of the appeal of rail for a drag, or land plane is that it's extremely hard and resists wear well?

MOSSROAD: Two likely venders for used track. Thank you.

CROSSTIES OF OCALA is about 55 miles distant, in the central part of the state.

PABOT is in South Florida, Boca Raton, probably a ten hour drive, but who knows where they may have a depot. PABOT may be export oriented. Also, it is high tourist season in South Florida and traffic will be heavy.

I will contact both Monday.

CSX in Jacksonville is about 130 miles distant. I will check with CSX too.

BAMBOOZLED: Modern rail is 136 lbs per yard. Good to know.

STREETCAR: I will price (new) steel beam. I have a top notch welding shop fifteen miles away who would be able to source and transport. Allowing for my time, steel beam may be net cheapest material.

(Later) This thread, started by NEWBURY, has been helpful: http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/350420-i-beam-pricing.html#post4332841

There are things other than rail that could work. Here's something I cobbled up. The old pipe flange provides more weight and adjustment for rotation.

Very creative. I am impressed.

How much did the components cost?

Anything you would change for a Mark II model?
