Where to buy surplus metal in Jacksonville?

Where do you find surplus metal yards? Are they listed in the phone book? Does anyone know of any in Jacksonville, FL?

Berman Brothers might be a place to try. I don't know if they re-sell but they do a heck of a scrap business. I would like a source myself. I always need less than a full piece of metal.

Having been around a machine shop a few years ago, and building junk on the side, I sold most of the companies scrap to Associtated Metals, later bought out by Commercial Metals on Lane Ave. Got to know the buyers pretty good. Very seldom would they let me get something from their pile of iron.
Berman Brothers is another story. The shop I worked at opened a charge account for just me, so I could buy my metal without having to run it thru the company. They did not have a minimun order at that time, unless you wanted delivery. I could buy a few things from the scrap bin, if I caught it just right. The account got closed when the business was sold, or I would offer you my discount.
Berman Brothers has a side of the business that sells new stuff, so they try to sell you that first. Small amounts of scrap don't pay enough to dig them out, so keep that in mind.
There was a small guy located next to the plumbing school right off I-10 (Diamond Metals, or something like that) He was where that grey tractor place was at also. If he is still in business, I would be surprised, because of where he got his supplies.
If your looking for anything in particular, let me know. I have one contact left in a shop, but they don't keep much on the steel rack, except in non ferous metals, and not much of that. Most of their stuff is bought already cut and ready to machine.

John at Diamond Metals closed down but someone else started it back up. They sent me a card but I haven't gone to them yet. They are now North Fla Metal Sales, 1512 Whitlock St. Kevin Klee, office- 904-743-6865 cell-904-838-8717.
Berman now has a $125. minium which isn't hard to get to now days. Berman has always paid more for scrap too.

I do it the hard way and buy new steel and its straight and rust free and I am always building something
The price for new steel is around .50 cents per pound
A good chopsaw, a welder and a grinder and watch the stuff appear /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Where do you get it from locally? I can remember buying beams in NW Indiana when I worked in industry up there for 29 cents a lbs. but that was beams that weighted about 250 per foot.

Bill, I have been buying from Metals USA on Cleveland Ave. Jacksonville, Florida for a long time, I am an individual and I like their prices and service and prices are within a couple of others and they have a $ 300. min. but that is no problem. I get what I will need and some extras for next time, like 2 X 2 X 1/4 angle etc.
I go there with my 19 foot boat trailer frame and they band and load it and off I go to make something new.
The price of 50 cents per pound is an average not an exact price.
