I am trying to re-forest about 2 acres of my property. I can get 1 year old saplings from the State of Ohio or from my county for aroud 50 cents to a dollar a piece but they are so small (12" to 18"). The local nurserys and garden stores seem to only stock much larger trees and much more expensive. Any ideas where I might find a little larger trees for $3-$5 a piece?

Musser Forests has a real nice selection of tree seedlings in various sizes at a reasonable price. You'll have to, in most cases, buy in lots of 10. However, you should order soon from these guys for Spring planting since their real popular species go very quickly.

We got into a program in Indiana where the state forester comes out to your property and gives it a survey. Then they tell you what type of trees will probably do the best. We had a list of over 20. Then we hired an approved forester to purchase and plant the trees. We went with alternating rows of white pines and hardwoods(seven kinds of oak, maple, poplar, walnut and a few I can't remember) and a wind break of shrubs and firs. The only stipulation was we had to either mow or side spray for 5 years to keep down weeds. After that, they are ours to do with as we please, except use for Christmas trees. The state re-imbursed us for 75% of the cost. When it was all said and done, we paid $265.00 to have 2150 trees planted and side sprayed the first year. That works out to about 8 cents per tree /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

That was around 1991. We drove by there today, and it is a beautiful young forest. Most of the pines have topped 20 feet and some are pushing 30. The hardwoods are tall and straight.

Check with your local soil and conservation district and see if there are any programs available in your state. In my opinion, that was one of the best deals that we ever made.

Don't know where you are in the state, but MeadWestvaco gives out white pines. I got 3,000 - the minumum amount that they will give you. I planted or at least tried to plant them last spring. They are kinda small but for free you can't complain. Only stipulation is they have to be on one tract of land. Might be a few too many trees for only 2 acres. I wish I would've had access to a tractor w/ a tree planter. That would have made life much easier. Only got about 2,000 of them planted. Of those looks to me maybe about 700 made it through the drought and lawnmower. Note to self: Keep the wife off the lawnmower around the trees. Some of my trees have shot up pretty good. Went from 6 - 8" talls to probably 20" or so. Will be moving some of them around to better locals come March or April. BXmark,
Good luck to you. I have struggled since 1979 to re-forest my 5 acre corn field. I accepted any and all trees offered. I also purchased lots of trees. But what I finally came to realize is that only GOD can re-forsest your property. Plant all you can. If GOD wants the tree there, it will grow. But kids come along and decide to change your mind. Deer eat the trees. Small animals eat in the winter and you will find the evidence in the spring (Bark eaten or cut right off!). Sometimes the rain doesn't come; or the moths eat your babies. My wife mowed over many of my children. Sometimes their feet don't like being wet, but the spring just produced too much rain. Sometimes the trees need just a little this or that, but don't get it.

Don't give up! I have been planting trees for the last 24 years; some are magnificent; some are still 12" tall; but I am determined! And I encourage you to continue! Find your trees where you can. Plant the free ones; dig some; and buy the best.

Good Luck. I know where you are headed!

I am no expert but I have heard that a lot of people take the 1 yr old trees and plant them (fairly tightly spaced) in raised beds for another couple of yrs. Much cheaper and it gets the trees used to your climate. Also makes it easier to water, protect from frost and animals until they are big enough to better fend for themselves.

I read that this was the preferred technique for establishing nut trees but should work for other trees as well. Dunno if it works for you but it is something to consider.

Fractal....

You're more of an expert than you may think. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif This is what many smaller nursery houses do when they buy from the likes of Musser Forests. They purchase in lots of 100s or 1000s, re-plant in their own beds, and then re-sell to places like Walmart and Home Depot during Spring planting season.
