I think the PTO shaft on the flail mower I got is a bit too short. There's only about 4" of overlap.

I figured it would be an easy thing to find. Especially here in the heart of ag country. I went to several major dealers in the area and none of them had PTO drive shafts. They all told me it would be exorbitantly expensive to "custom build" one for me. I went to a driveline place and they quoted me about $170.00 to rebuild the shaft I have with longer shafts and safety covers.

Is it really this difficult to replace a simple drive shaft?! On the implement end it has the push-pin release. The tractor end has the collar type release.

Any suggestions?

Not sure where you are located, but if you take it into Tractor Supply (or the like) the should be able to match it to a new halfshaft.

In eastern Idaho. Wish we had TSC around here. We have a ranch supply place but they don't carry them.

That could be an option.

The shaft is made by Bondioli and Pavesi.

I found a fiew places online that sell the inner and outer tubes, but only in 54 inch length's which I could cut down drastically.

Just aggravating that every single implement comes with a PTO shaft, but you just can't find the darn shaft when you need one.

I would second Stan's suggestion to try an extender. Mount it onto the flail, and you should be fine. There are cheaper versions available through Agri-Supply, Surplus Center, and TSC, along with others.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but how come there are so many different shapes of PTO shaft, and why are they all Italian? The linked shaft in an earlier post is triangular. Some of mine are oval shaped. My old implements all have normal steel shop square tubing. I'm surprised there isn't more commonality in shaft shapes, and I'm also surprised there isn't a plethora of Chinese versions.

Everything Attachments has them. They also have a video on how to properly measure/cut them to fit your implement.

You might check w. the manufacturer of the Flail Mower. I just bought a replacement PTO shaft for my rotary cutter. They wanted something like $320 bucks for one at TSC. I was able to buy one from Howse(the mfg. of my cutter) for $137.00 shipped to my door. IT was way cheaper than any after market shaft I could find.
