Where\'s my grass skirt?????

Here's a couple pictures of a Tiki Bar I just completed building at work. There's over 1000lbs worth of treated lumber in that baby! It's on casters, but takes 3 grown men and a horse to move it. It breaks into 3 sections for easy storage.

Now how's about that Bahama Mamma?????

Indy,
Very nice work. I hope nobody puts out your tikki torch and kicks you off the island. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I do not partake of the demon alcohol /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif, but when I was in the Bahamas on liberty call many moons ago. I had a sample of the afor mentioned drink. They are very tasty and I know you will have fun in the sun.
I mean no ill will to the drinkers here, I am only kidding about the demon thing.

I'm not gonna get on a soapbox here, but I'm not much of a drinker anymore myself. Back in the day, I made a few distillers filthy rich.

Nowdays, the "hard stuff" is when I foresake the CAFFINE FREE Diet Pepsi for the caffine enriched stuff.....

You know, I may be kidding myself, but despite the advertisers claims, I think this whole country has eased up a bit on alcohol. Those of us who can remember the 50's and 60's know a Martini was the first thing you did when you got home from work, and many more after that - just to unwind. I think that whole culture has gone by the wayside.........
I'm also a non-drinker, due to health issues not choice, but drinking's never been all that interesting to me anyway.....
Nice bar Indy, looks well done............can I get a Diet Coke please? Lots of ice...............

Coke with plenty of ice it is!!!

At the very least, people are being more descrete with their drinking (for the most part)

In May of 1988, I was following about 1/4 mile behind a school bus on I-71, near Carrolton Kentucky. It was night-time. The bus was returning from Kings Island, near Cinncinatti Ohio. There was a load of young folks on the bus. Their church had sponsored the trip to the amusment park.

I saw a massive crash in front of me. Then the bus exploded in flames. 27 (if my memory is correct ) kids, and the bus driver were killed. Most burnt to death. The cause....?

A drunk driver was going the wrong direction on the interstate. He had no idea what he had done. His Toyota pick-up hit the gas tank on the bus. (This accident is largely responsible for school buses all being diesel powered nowdays)

There were about 2 dozen passers-by that tried to get near the bus. The flames were too intense. By the time we could get near it, emergency vehicles were on the scene.

If I live to be a million years old, I'll never forget the sounds coming from that bus.....

I haven't had much desire for any alcohol since.

Re: Where\'s my grass skirt?????

Just read about your experience with the bus. Tragic things seem to stick with us forever. I think that in one way or another all of us "former drinkers" have experienced something that has changed our opinion of the drinking habit, but hopefully not as extreme as yours.

Make mine a diet Mountain Dew please. At least Mountain Dew is the same color going in as it is coming out! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Where\'s my grass skirt?????

I'm sorry about the bus incedent. It must have been horrible.

In 1991 I was arrested for drunk driving. Turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. Never, ever will I drink and drive again. I rarely drink anymore, and when I do, it's just a couple beers at home.

Funny thing is, when I was in High School I didn't drink much, or in the Marines. But when I was an Embassy Guard with the State Department, that's all we did. Diplomats spend all their time drinking. The entire diplomatic community is one big fraternity. Just about any night of the week, theres some diplomatic function (party) at one of the embassies. Coming back to the real world after years of nightly parties was kind of hard to adjust to. At least until I got my wake up call.

But back to the Tiki Hut.

Awesome job. What did you use for the thatch? Is it grass? I heard very thin baboo will last almost forever, but the grass needs replaceing fairly often, depending on your climate and exposure to the elements.

It's an awesome look that will transform the entire landscape.

Indy,
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to take the conversation away from your nice work on the bar. It really is nice work too.
That is an interesting question someone else asked about the thatch on the roof. What materials did you use?
Have fun with it.
Oh! and thanks to the guys for keeping the conversation thus far a civil one.

Carrolton bus crash of 1988, I remember it well. Lots of tears for lots of years over that one. Did you know the prosecutor at the time in KY had a heart attack over that. 2 Days I think after the crash. I have never met anyone that was as close to it as you were.
