Planning a pole barn this spring, turns out the roofing material is a significant part of the cost. Whats the most cost effective choice and is it just as cheap to get it at the local Lowes or Home Depot....or order it from a supplier? Is galvanized or corrugated aluminum ok? What do most people do that are trying to keep costs down?
Thanks, Jon

If you are looking for metal roofing, avoid the box stores. They sell a very light, flimsy metal that's fine for a shed or something temporary, but not a building that you care about.

My favorite supplier for metal is Muellers. I don't know where Huntsville is, but go to Mueller, Inc. - Home Page and see if there's one close to you.

When I built my pole barn several years ago, I ordered my metal roofing from (dare I say it?) Home Depot. It is Fabral metal roofing ( Metal Roofing, Metal Siding and Wall Systems – Fabral ). I used their "Grandrib 3". Fabral's web site has a dealer search function. At the time, I checked several of the listed dealers near me and HD had the best prices.

Last year I built a studio for my DW. I went back to HD and now they carry ABC metal roofing ( American Building Components: Metal Roofing, Metal Siding and Metal Building Construction ). I ordered it from HD. I used their "PBR Metal Panel".

In both cases, I spec'd out the roofing from the manufacturer's web site, ordered and got exactly that from HD.

In the case of the barn, I had help from my FIL and wife's uncle. In the case of the studio, I did all of the roofing myself.

Thanks Eddie, they're about 20 minutes from my place. BTW Huntsville is about 80 miles north of Houston.

I'm building an equipment shed now using Gibralter's R-panel metal roofing and siding, powered coated (red siding, white roofing). The panels are 3-ft wide and cost $2.71 per linear ft for 29 ga material which is suitably thick for sheds and barns, but probably not for houses (use 26 ga).

You can get galvanized corrugated panel 3 ft wide for half that price.

I spent the extra bucks for the colors on that shed to match the house and shop colors.

Forgot to mention that I bought the metal panels from Home Depot.

Bill,

Great pictures, the studio came our very nice!!!

Didn't you start a thread a few years ago about building a quilting studio for your wife? I seem to remember pics of you on a rented mini excavator digging the footings for the foundation, but I don't remember anything else about it.

Eddie, you have a good memory!

Yes, that was me.
I started digging the footings - and posted about it - in April '07. I'm afraid that's where my posting stopped 'cause from then until I finished the building in November '07, I was working on the building every minute I wasn't working at my "day job". My DD's boyfriend helped me raise the wall panels and set the trusses and I hired out the drywalling and siding 'cause I was running out of time but I did everything else.

By the time I was done I was so tired of that building I wanted to forget it all... :p ... I just never got around to posting about it.

Now, time's gone by and I can look back on the work - - don't want to do it again but it was worthwhile...

Thanks for your compliment.
