Where's the birds?

I am pretty sure bats hibernate.

Finally saw a big flock of small birds pecking at some road kill today and one hawk recently. That is all so far. We did have a light snow Wed, just enough to cover the ground. I sent a query to the newspaper but got no answer and nothing in the paper about it.

Another odd thing. I used to have a big ?flock? of barn swallows. I haven't seen one of those in several years.

A little snow each of the last two mornings and the feeders are busy. I believe the snow has covered whatever their natural source of feed was.

I don't put bird feeders up, as my 84 year old neighbour feeds the birds and I just let her do it, but I've seen plenty Robin Red Breasts lately, but less Black Birds for some reason...

I haven't seen any birds around here for a while. However there may be a reason. For the last few days I've been hearing a screech from some bird. It sounds like the screech that accompanies those tv documentary scenes that show an eagle soaring above a mountain.
I haven't spotted him yet, but I think that I have a raptor.

So he is either scaring all the other birds away or killing them you reckon ?

At my new place there's an eagle about a mile away and he patrols the area as well as a chicken/rabbit hawk, between them the birds lay low as well as the squirrels. I saw an eagle take a groundhog that was running across the field, so if he can grab a running 12 lb or so juvenile groundhog the squirrels and rabbits don't stand a chance. They may prefer fish, but that one grabbed a dead possum out of the road a couple of weeks ago.;)

Still waiting to spot that Ivory-billed Woodpecker that has come back from extinction. This town needs some re-invigorating. Or maybe an apparition of the Virgin Mary would work.

sorry fellow Birders...

No snow on the ground yet and that means lots of other food sources. We feed all year round and have cardinals, Flickers, Downey Woodpeckers so far. Last week we had a HUGE flock of starlings but they stayed in the cornfield north of the house.
