The Goodyear has a highest weight rating, but the Yokohama looks to be a good tire.

One other thing has anyone ran Westlake trailer tires?

You are not comparing apples to apples. Different sizes yield different load ratings.

My personal experience is the Marathons are junk. I had a set on my car hauler trailer bought new in 2007 and lost 3 in 2 years hauling no more than 5,000# most of the time on a 7,000# trailer. I replaced them with Greenballs last spring and not a single issue and now have loaded the tires on my tractor so its heavier.

I put a set of Marathons (ST215 75 R14) on my boat trailer last year. They used to made in China, but because of the problems they were having GoodYear moved production back to the States....North Carolina I believe. I made sure mine said Made in USA before I would let them be mounted. I've never heard of Grenballs in my neck of the woods. Anyway, so far...so good

I had 4 Marathons on my Holiday Rambler Aluma-Lite 34' Travel trailer and when we were in South Dakota one blew off the rim. never seen a tire come apart like that before, piece of the tire bounced off the top rim of the windshield of father-in- laws truck. No damage to his truck though.I now run Carlisle or Maxxis E range only.

Around here Carlisle is a dirty word but the Maxxis is most folks second choice after the Greenballs. Last set of Carlisle I had on the boat trailer in my avitar had 5 total failures out of 7 tires in less than 2,500 miles. I replaced with Greenballs of the same size and load range and not a single issue in 4 years. I would not hesitate to put either Maxxis or Greenballs on any trailer I sell, service, or own but will not touch a trailer with Carlisle or Marathons again.

I agree. D rated tires are OK but they can be tricky for a flat bed trailer that may haul a tractor and here is the reason why.

Let us say you have four 2000 pound rated tires. Loading the load so you get equal weight on each tire typically is not even possible and that is why tire experts use the 80% rule to help prevent blow outs due to overloading a tire.

In my view it takes at least a "E" rated tire (+/- 3000 pound rating) on an equipment hauling trailer. The next time you see a bush hog with 4' hanging off the back of the trailer look and see if the load is equally split between the four tires.

I agree with wvpolekat. I've owned many types of trailers over the last 55 + years and when I bought tires they had to be made in the U.S.A. In 2006 my PJ Flatbed Cargo Trailer came with tires I never hear of. They were Freestar Radial Tubeless ST 235/80R16 ET-108MS Tires (Made in China). Over 45,000 miles later I still have a lot of rubber left and they have held up better than most tires that I've owned. Every 2 to 6 months or so I make my run from the SF Bay Area where I still own a house to my place up at 8,000' in the Rockies (2,600 miles round trip) and that includes heavy loads of up to 12,000 lbs GVW with outside air temps of 122 degrees F going thru Needles, CA enroute on Hwy 40. The killer of tires is heat, under-inflation, and high speeds. I try to keep my diesel engine at just under 2K RPM in 6th gear with cruise control holding about 65MPH with occasional 70 to 80 MPH when passing and the tires run cool. I'd love to switch to 16" tires that would make the choice easy, but I'm having issues finding 16 wheels the fit my GM 5 on 5" hubs.

If you are running 5 lug rims you are more than likely running 3,500# rims so D rated tires will be fine. You will not see 5,200# or 6,000# rims until you get into 6 lug rims.

The heat and under inflation tip is a great one. I tow weekly. I did 400 miles last week and will do a solid 350 tomorrow. I always check the pressure before I set out.
