Which anti virus??

 / Which anti virus?? #11
We have always had Norton. I know a fellow, a true computer geek, he can write code and design circuits and runs some sort of internet buisness claims Norton is best. I don't know. I have heard that Norton, because it is on so many machines that it may, like IE, become a target of hackers.
Now that I have finally achieved high speed acces I have Norton anit virus, Zome Labs pro Firewall, Spy Bot Search and Destroy and StopZilla running on both machines. I am considering adding Ghost Surf. I am told by my geek friend that it works well. He however, recommends Norton Internet Security over Zone Lab. I have been told otherwise by others. I wonder if any of this actually does anything? J

AVG that others have mentioned is good, there's also Avast (http://www.avast.com/), also good and also free for home use.
Avast is what I been using for about a year now. It is by far the best that I have ever used. They seem to update it at least three times a week. Since I have had Avest, I haven't had a single virus get though as far I know. But, using Thunderbird, Mozilla and SeaMonkey helps allot also.

I agree with AVG- it's running on my other computer. On my current one I'm using a new Microsoft anti-virus that is currently free while it is being developed. I'm actually quite happy with it and it's easy to use. It only works with Windows XP, you can get it from Microsoft Anti-Virus

This is a case for Linux!!
But besides that Everyone says AVG - I do like that one - but one I use on my Windows box is Clamwin http://clamwin.org this is a true open source Virus scan - auto updates the works - it even found a couple that AVG did not.
But like most things it is a matter of Opinion.
I used to work for Mcafee But I will not use Mcafee or Norton any more because they put WAY to many items that are "needed" in your memory, if you disable any of them parts of it will not work.

This site is great because of people like all of you who have helped me.
Special thanks to Hud for the warning re: removing Norton, it took a little extra effort but I got it off and have AVG installed.

Thanks again to all.

My personal preference is NOD32 from Eset. Very low resource use, and very good detection rate. At least for Windows. I haven't explored much since switching to Linux. It's on my to-do list. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

AVG in this side of the world as well. I start using it since they offered free, I'm on DSL where the puter is exposed to the internet 24/7, so far no problem with viruses at all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm just kicking this topic back to the top, as I am about to uninstall Norton and install AVG. I have had an ongoing issue with Norton telling me my subscription has expired when it hasn't,and not letting me get updates. Next day it will show the correct expiration date and let me update. Out, I say, out with you Norton.

OK, the question, primarily for those running AVG--do you also use Zone Alarm or anything else as a firewall? Anything at all along with AVG? Thank you.

I had the very same issues with Norton. Finally got fed up with the mess and went AVG. AVG has always done everything that Norton did including installing automatic updates. The only addition that we use is the firewall software that is included with our DSL router.

AVG is free.....
