My property has an old drive way/farm road running across part of it. Has not been used for many years and is over grown. Once the house is built it will be part of the back yard so I want to seed it for lawn. I don't know how deep the base(gravel/sinder/sand) is but based on the existing drive that is used I don't think it's too deep. What would be the best way to proceed? I was wondering if you could just use a plow and turn it under then prep that for seed.

g42,

1. A lawnscape rake to scrape/move the gravel to a central location.
2. Then a FEL to relocate to gravel somewhere else.
3. A box scraper to loosen and grade.
4. Use the FEL and landscape rake to move some composted manure (available free at horse fams) to the area.
5. A tiller to combine the manure into the ground.
6. A seeder to seed and fertalize the grass.
7. Then spread hay by hand (I don't know of an attachment to help here).
8. Then a pull behind sprayer to water.
9. An Aerator to maintain in the long run.
10. Finally a mower to mow.

Got enought to buy? You gotta love it!

A trailer to carry the hay and your neighbor (wife, brother, nephew, whoever) throwing out the hay while you drive the tractor! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif Gotta get that seat time! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Or your nieghbor could just break the bales into fourths from the back of the trailer and you could drive the mower over if you have a rear discharge.

Fearing to bring down the wrath of---never mind. A boxblade will perform that task. I used a 48 on my BX, the Kubota 7548. KK has a very similar XB 48 inch. They also have a 42 inch which might be a better choice in really heavy soil. With the boxblade you could tear up the old drive and then back push it into a pile which would then be scooped up with the FEL. New top soil could be purchased and spread using the FEL and boxblade and then smoothed by bacdragging or get a flexible harrow like in the Northern catalog for about 300 or 400 dollars and drag the area to prepare a seed bed and then using a push broadcaster put out the seed and use a roller to push it in or not--that is optional.
I think you will find it cost effective to get the FEL now. I am sure there is someone who has more time on a BX other than me but not many--my bio needs updating cuz my BX is well broken in now. My BX is currently with my parents, my sister and husband where all three of us own acerage plots within a stones throw of each other, the 2410 will have to soldier on here alone. This was the plan all along, I just thought orginnally I would keep the BX here longer but the work is piling up down there, hoses and stuff. It will be well cared for there.
You might look at the XB-BX thread--I posted the cover pic of the KK XB catalog. Some of their stuff is availble at Atwoods. Check it out. J

xb-bx???Also, a few people have stated the loader is more economical to buy with the tractor... but the dealer I checked with gave me the same price either way. $2570. I have not checked with the dealer I will buy from yet.

Guy,

It would have been $800 cheaper for me to add the FEL when I bought my tractor (L3410). I don't know about the BX.

BTW, I ordered my L482 Loader yesterday... The wife was not pleased.

I've checked with three dealers in my area now, the one I'm buying the tractor from and two others. All had the loader at $2570.00 with or without a tractor sale. The dealer I'm buying from advised me to wait, if I don't need it right now, but make sure and buy one if the tractor model changes. After a model change they keep loaders for about one year.

g42guy,

It's hard to say exactly what the savings was, but in my package it was broken out as I believe 3 or 400 dollars cheaper. Of course, he could have been charging MSRP for the loader and giving me a really good deal on the tractor:) It's hard to go back after the fact, because until the dealer knows you may buy it from him, they probably aren't giving you the best price they can. Anyway, if you add it later and it does end up costing you a few bucks more, it's better than insisting on it up front and not being able to afford to buy anything. Good luck with the tractor.

Have you seen the Landpride scarifier. http://www.landpride.com/lp/products/sf25_specs.html It is like the teeth of a box blade by themselves. You can also hook up a landscape rake behing the scarifier to bust them up and smooth them out. Some people talk about chipper to spread hay. Have you thought of a night job? The need for more toys... errr tools will suck you in. Sometimes a good rental store can stave it off for a while but the prognosis isn't good./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
