Which Brand Finish Mower?

I hadn't either until a pipe fence was finished and a few cut off pieces got tossed in the grass. Sure makes a racket. I do very little actual finish mowing and find that a rock does terrible damage to the mower so I primarily use the rotary cutter as it cuts well, although not quite as short and takes a lot of abuse that the finish mowers can't tolerate.

Things I have learned to look for in a RFM:

Heavy. If it's too light it will spend more time in the air than on the ground when mowing fast. And it will beat itself to death.

Easy to grease. RFM's require a lot of greasing.

Spring loaded wheel castors. If the castors flop around loose the wheels will scalp your yard. Every two feet with all four wheels.

One piece Kevlar belt. Lasts a long time with no adjustment.

Cast iron blade spindles. Some mowers have mild steel welded spindles. These will bend before a blade. Expensive, time consuming to replace, and hard to find.

Rear discharge. For mowing close on both sides. Older rear discharge mowers were bad mowers. Left a windrow. The newer ones are much better now.

Anti-scalp roller on the front of the mower. Keeps the blades from being a landscape tool.
