I'll concede the field plowing and stump pulling events in advance.;)

How about the which tractor can lift the other one 5' in the air and cary it around event? We could probably get some ESPN coverage of something like that. Move over WWF, make way for Extreme Tractoring.

Nah!.....It's like comparing an A-10 warthog to the F-22 Raptor. Each is the best at what they were made for..... Personally, I like the A-10  .
No frills, simple,....with a tool box that comes with three sizes of hammers....and a back-up hammer in case you lose one of the other three.

But still....PT vs CUT  .

LOL... my favorite too... the A-10 is probably one of the best aircraft (if not THE BEST) aircraft in history at reliably doing what it was designed to do... There's nothing like watching an A-10 on a strafing run, especially if they're using High Explosive - Incendiary (HEI) rounds...

Have a look -- here's a good description of the GAU-8. The A-10 was specifically designed to carry this gatling gun into battle -- it is an integral part of the airframe, and you can't tow the aircraft with the gun removed -- the frame is too weak.

Here's test firing the GAU-8:

The A-10 is the only fixed wing aircraft in history that has actually captured prisoners. During Desert Storm a pair of A-10s caught an Iraqi convoy on the road in the middle of a minefield. They killed the front vehicle and the last one, and the Iraqis had nowhere to go except off the road onto the minefield... instead they piled out of the vehicles and started waving white flags. The A-10 pilots radioed a chopper to come and take over, then circled until the chopper arrived, carrying soldiers who took charge of the prisoners...

There was an incident during the first Gulf war where Iraqi soldiers surrendered to a (fixed wing) drone operated from a Navy battleship as a forward observer for the 16 inch guns. The explanation was that a sighting of the drone--or remotely piloted vehicle if you prefer--was associated with bombardment by the 16 inch guns.

Thanks, Bob. I'd heard of the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle, in Air Force vernacular) incident, but inadvertantly didn't consider it a "fixed-wing aircraft." Thanks for the correction...

Now that some UAVs, like the Predator, are carrying missiles such as the Hellfire, we may see even more of these surrenders in the future.

Don't you love you tube! I figure the PTs are the A-10s of the tractor world. YOu either love them or hate them... simple, reliable.....all you need is a screwdriver, bailing wire, and a hammer to work on them:D .

More like the C-46. Hardly anyone has ever heard of it. It was able to operate loaded in steep, rugged terrain that other aircraft couldn't handle, was made in limited quantities compared to its near look alike, the C-47, had a few odd one-offs produced, and leaked gas badly enough to be a disaster if someone was shooting at it. ;)
