Which Deere would you recommend for a 1 acre lot

If he can swing it, an X300 series would be perfect. If he can't afford that much, find a good heavy duty machine somewhere. I ran an 18hp Craftsman hydro for ~8 years doing the same things you mentioned before upgrading. I abused that machine and it kept going! Sold it to my neighbor across the street last summer and it's still working great for him. If you don't abuse them, even the lighter machines will do okay. Even though I did abuse mine, I wouldn't recommend doing so with the lighter guys... For a one acre lot, almost any machine will work for several years. The question is how much quality and duration is he willing to purchase?

A light box store brand = a few years. An X300 or above = lifetime.

although not a current JD owner, from what I read on this and other forums you should avoid the 100 series sold at big box stores, the x300 series, the next size up you should go with the x320 (or x340, x360) because they have better transaxle, the x360 has power steering and lift, but if you are spending for x360 you could for a small upcharge go to the x500 and get traction assist. the x320 is about $4000 the x500 about $5000 or more.
I have the same problem, which to get, would like a 2305 with FEL but would it look silly on my arce lot, then again the 12 cu.yds of mulch and 4 tons of top soil, are still in a pile after attempting to move by wheelbarrow, only half the mulsh moved in two months, with FEL it would be moved in one day, and there is always the driveway in winter, a x320 or x500 or 2305 would be able to be help there.
Money is the only problem, if you buy small you will always want a bigger one.

There are folks who regularly post on here who own subcuts and live in the city, on a 1/3 acre lot, 80x200, etc. Not making a judgment about that.

But, remembering that an acre is approximately the size of a football field, no one would look silly with a subcut on an acre lot, if one mows, has a gravel drive, chips, landscapes, gardens and plows snow. Dang useful I'd call it.

And the exact reason why may people with smaller lots buy sub compacts. What tasks you need the machine for is more important than the size lot it is on.

A 9630 should do the trick!

1*oh yea, if it were me, I would probably stay away from the JD's that are sold through the box stores and instead go to a JD dealer for one of their lawn and garden tractors.

1*Good advice .

Would buy the biggest riding lawn mower you can afford, and if its a deere it might not be much.Gear is better[longer lasting in lawnmowers if your pulling stuff and on hills],than hydro. What does he plan on spending? Not much of a limit, than one of those 500 or 700 series deere lawnmowers, limit of 3 grand or so,
2*get the best deal you can at lowes/homedepo/sears.
Buy from a dealer not a B B S .

3*It's all about use not land size.

bp,
Don't forget the winter snow chores. I have a JD4115 (w/1.5 acre lot). 24hp cut, loader and 72" mid mower deck and more. My tractor works all year long!
Dream big!!!

Thinking about other uses than just mowing and towing, an X300 (or better) can easily handle a front mounted blade for pushing things (snow, dirt) and a johnny bucket for lifting dirt or mulch. You don't always need diesel power. Its certainly nice if the disposable income can handle it, but it's not always a necessity...

Does it have to b a jd?
My new neighbor is looking for a tractor. Most of the property is flat though there is a slope area in the back of his house. The tractor would be used to cut grass, and bring small logs from the back woods area to the front of the house (on a cart of course) for his fire place.
