Which Hydraulic Valve

I have a JD 4700 with a #48 hoe. I have a manual thumb on the hoe and I want to make it Hydraulic. I have made the choice on the cylinder ( Northern Tool & Equipment Catalog),
Page #228 Prince 2500 psi welded tee cylinders Item # 908308-B974, 3" bore , 8" stroke. Now I need to decide on a valve and I know nothing about them. I like the looks of the Solenoid valve on Page #230 in the Catalog Item #202301-B974 but is this a complete valve? It would be nice to have just a little Elec. switch on the dipper stick handle instead of a regular valve w/lever mounted somewhere that is reachable but would have to move your hand to operate. Any Ideas from the Hydraulic Gods out there? thank you for any help.

I know nothing about selector valves either. But after reading about them on tbn, decided I wanted one on my brush grapple. I purchased a MS06-UDNA-01-12B (brand not known) & installed it on my front loader. For some reason it would not feed full power to the cylinder & it would not hold what it had. Specs specified it had a leak rate. I finally returned it and got a refund. So I guess I am saying, do not purchase a valve with this part #. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The electric solenoid valves in the Northern catalog usually specify the size as being D03 or D05 and they mention the valve comes with the complete kit. The valve does not have threaded fittings and will require the corresponding D03 od D05 manifold that will cost as much as the valve. I learned about that the hard way, and I sent a complaint to Northern to mention in the description that it requires a manifold.

Also, you probably need a three position valve to extend and retract the cyclinder.

Thanks guys for the replies. Yes, I found out today after talking with a Northern Tool tech that I would need the manifold to go with the Solenoid Valve. I guess I should have done a little more research on Solenoid valves before I decided thats what I wanted. If $$ was no object then maybe I would go that way but $$ is always and object thats pretty hard to get around. Another thought for a regular valve would be a rocker handle that could be foot actuated, any thoughts?

Hi,

Someone here in the past mentioned the SURPLUS CENTER as a source of hydraulic stuff.

No web site that I know of, but a call to 1-899-488-3407 will get you a catalog. I got one some months ago and I love looking through it.

About half [or more] of the 160 pages are hydraulics, cylinders, valves, hoses, fittings and so on. Still havn't ordered anything from them yet...

Thanks for pointing out that web site...Don't think it was there when I got my hard copy of their catalog.

When I first looked I did not realize that the small black listings are actually clickable. I clicked on the red and nothing happened...

I belive Surplus Center ad in Rock and Dirt magazine was the place where i bought a few the JD dealer here gave some customers of mine a hard time ove them getting a solenoid valve for the grapples wanted 800 dollars in all for parts labor and there vavle was a single port. Surplus center had some that were dual ports for 149.98 Hope this helps Taylor Lambert
