As a youth, I used an old IH tractor that had a sickle mower behind it. I thought it was called a "C", but after seeing other pics here, it was definitely not a "C".

It was much smaller than a "C", and had a very WIDE rear wheel base. The operator sat to the right of tractor, with clutch and brakes both to the right of the main body. I think it was tricycle, but it was a long time ago. The rear tires were about 2/3rds the size as on an 8N Ford, as I recall. Any clues which one it was?

Any links to old IH pics? THANKS.

The farmall offsets were the Cub and A/super A.

There were several models that had the Cultivision offset.
You may be thinking of a A.
Here is one on EBAY that may show what you want. Click Here
I had a Cub with sickle mower attachment. But do not remember how it was mounted.
My Dad had a A that we used for many years. Think he got rid of it around 1965.

If it was a tricycle front end, I believe it was a "B". I think all the "A"s and Cubs were wide front, B's were narrow, and C's on up could be had either way.

Sounds to me like you are talking about a Farmal B. It was a narrow front end and could be either a single or double narrow front ent. The operator sat ofset, with the clutch and brake on a small platform to the right of the center of the engine, about 19 hp with a 4 sp trans that was on the drivers left. Thry wern't made many years and the Farmall C took it's place it the Farmall line as the smallest 2 row tractor.

That works. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You could have done a edit on your original post to repost the picture.

Only the cubs and the A's were offset in the letter series.
I sort of understood that this was an offset tractor.

Thanks for all the replies.

The IH was definitely offset, and probably the size of an "A".

What my memory says though (and it might be foggy) was that the rear axle spacing was twice the width of the pics shown here.

Sure would like to find something that size to play with now.

I've owned a 49 JD M, then a McCormack 15-30, and I want to go SMALLER now.

THANKS.

This part of PA seems to be IH country, more often than not farms that are still working are running one or more 66 series IH's from the seventies, and you still see an occasional H, M, or hundred series on the 2nd or 3rd string doing raking or pulling a wagon.

Not too hard to find an "A", "Cub" or "H" around here. "C's" seem to be somewhat less common and "B's" rarer yet, but none seem all that hard to find and the prices are pretty low. If you're not strongly inclined to sticking to only the old 'letter' series - the later hundred series are out there. I think the "A" was made (in final form as the 140) right up to the mid-sixties.

Wasn't the A made through the 140 series clear up till '76? I thought I read that in one of my books on IH, but am not totally sure without the reference in front of me.

Might well have been - the IH 'data book' I have handy in my desk drawer at work only covered up through the 130 (which ended in 1958) so I was guessing from memory on the 140.

A late 140 has a lot of 'practical' advantages over an early A, but I still like the original Lowey look of a letter series. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To my understanding, the A and the B were basically the same tractor, the operator set to the right side of the tractor. The A had a short axle on the left side of the tractor and a long axle on the right side, where the operator sat. On the B, the operator sat on the right side of the tractor same as on the A, but the B had a long axle on the left side of the tractor also which gave it a wide stance therefore the only offset being the operator platform and the operator, the engine and drive train on the B was not offset as on the A.

I am thinking it was a "B" if it had a really WIDE rear. The "C" replaced it around 1948 or '49.

The A and B are the same except for the offset engine and operators seat on the right on the A. I believe the engine and such are the same. All the A's I have seen had wide fronts and all the B's I have seen had narrow fronts. I suppose the B could have a wide front, but I have not seen any. The C is a larger tractor and are not offset. The CUBS are like a smaller A, being offset.
