Which John Deere's Are Home Depot Specials?

The Onan Performer series used to be my favorite air cooled engine when they produced them- smooth, well balanced, relaible. I suppose they had their lemons, but I never ran in to one. If something went wrong with one, it wasn't too expensive to fix unless the engine was completely blown up. I have heard some of the earlier water cooled Kawi V twins having some camshaft gear problems that are expensive to fix and some fuel pump problems on EFI ones. I suppose nothing much has really changed, you'll still get the people who maintain their engines and get a couple thousand hours from them, and the people who don't who get 500 hours or less from them.

With all the EPA regs being thrown on small engine manufacturers lately, the designs and materials are now all about the same among small gas engines. Those who can't comply are being economically forced out of the game, Tecumseh being the latest victim.

Tecumseh is a victim of the Murray bankruptcy and bad management more than the EPA.

I have to agree that if I were shopping I would look at the used high end machines over the newer ones. The 318's are good but becoming collectable so the prices can get a little crazy sometimes. I am a huge fan of the 455. The top of the line a few generations ago. They can be found in good shape for around $2800 - $4000 and are simply amazing machines. The Yanmar diesel has proven record of reliability and I would put it's 22 HP up against any of the "more powerful" 27HP gas engines out there. They are also WAY better on fuel that their gas counter parts and very quite. Seeing as you already have a diesel, you have the fuel around.

I traded one in on my 2210 and can say I miss it!
