The Onan Performer series used to be my favorite air cooled engine when they produced them- smooth, well balanced, relaible. I suppose they had their lemons, but I never ran in to one. If something went wrong with one, it wasn't too expensive to fix unless the engine was completely blown up. I have heard some of the earlier water cooled Kawi V twins having some camshaft gear problems that are expensive to fix and some fuel pump problems on EFI ones. I suppose nothing much has really changed, you'll still get the people who maintain their engines and get a couple thousand hours from them, and the people who don't who get 500 hours or less from them.
With all the EPA regs being thrown on small engine manufacturers lately, the designs and materials are now all about the same among small gas engines. Those who can't comply are being economically forced out of the game, Tecumseh being the latest victim.
