I want to buy a compact tractor to use on my 23 acres and I'm not sure which model would be best. I don't want to try and save a couple of thousand dollars only to find that I should have went to a larger size unit. I want to be able to bush hog, level my gravel drive. Move dirt and stone around my 5 acre pond. I know a compact tractor isn't a do all machine and it will have it's limits but I want to try and get one that will do as much as possible. I'm open to other brands but it seems that from what I have read Kubota quality stands high. A local dealer is saying to go to a L3010 with a loader which he quoted at 17,500, and I don't know if that's a fair price or not. Guys I need lots of help!

Joeinindy, I don't think anyone can tell you which is best without knowing exactly what you intend to do and how much room you have to maneuver, how much time you want to spend, etc. Sounds to me like your dealer is giving you about the best advice. A smaller tractor will do most of the things a bigger one will do; just takes longer. A bigger tractor will not only do it faster, but ride more comfortably at the same time. Buy the biggest thing you can afford AND have room to manuever where the work is.

Joe,

Buy the good looking, ruggedly built, stronger "BLUE" one!
It reads "New Holland" on the hood!
You won't be dissappointed! /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

I would definitly move towards the Grand L-series or at least the L-series including the L-2600 or 3000. Anything less and you will be disappointed as the tasks might take to long as you will be a bit under sized. You might want to look at the small M's but that would take you to a bit of over kill.

I think you're headed in the right direction and the L3010 is certainly enough for the uses you described. Go back and read some of the old posts, all the info you're looking for has been covered many times over. Try a search for "hp per acre" which was a pretty extensive discussion on tractor sizing vs how much land you had etc. I think you'll find the consensus here to buy as big as you can go and still do all the tasks you want to accomplish. The only thing a larger tractor won't do better than a smaller one is maneuver and get into tight places (ie woods, maneuvering in an indoor arena etc) I use an L2500 for 11 acres, horses, bushhogging etc. I would have liked the L3010 HST better but the extra $ just weren't around.

As you notice when doing your home work towards a new tractor can be fun /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif also confusing. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Maybe look at your land and figure out what you like to see for a out come.
Get as much information as you can and chat with others also dealers,CraverEquipment.com has pretty good spec.
Just take your time deciding toward your new investment.
The B29&L3010 seems to be about right for the work in which you have plan, also for the future.

Stay safe and enjoy.

Joeinindy -

Like Gerard I have an L2500DT w/LB400 loader, and like you I have a good-size hunk of land (42 acres) with a large pond.

I only have 22 hours in the seat, but I've gotten a lot of the kind of work you're talking about done with no complaints (lots o' pictures in my online scrapbook).

If money were no object I think the 3010 is the one I would have gotten just 'cuz it's got some nicer features and, of course, more horsepower (we always lust after more horsepower). The 3010 would certainly do the job for you, but so would the no-frills L3000DT or even the L2600DT (about $16K and $15K respectively).

It's not an easy decision, but I think you're on the right track with an L-series Kubota. Do your research and, like somebody already said, get as much horsepower as you can afford. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Good luck.

Joe, you are smart to look at a larger tractor for that amont of land if you intend to work even a portion of it. I own(d) larger used tractors like the L series and have rented some of the smaller ones like the 2710, while the smaller 2710 is a great machine, I love having the greater lift and bucket capacity of the larger tractors. You are also correct that the Kubotas are well made. The HST unit is second to none. If you plan on using a mid mount mower, the L 3710 will be ther largest Kubota tractor you can get, after that they do not have a mid pto to run the mid mower. The L4610 HST is a super machine, good loader lift and plenty of power, it just starts getting a little pricey. Check out carverequipment.com for some great info, and by all means check into all the other brands like John Deere and New Holland, the best way to ensure yourself your making the right decision is to check out all that is available to you and eliminate those that do not meet your requirements. My next tractor is going to be the Kubota Grand L 4610 HST or the new L48 HST. Rat...

I can only give you limited pointers so bear with me /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif. I have only heard great reviews about the economy L and Grande L series. I dont know much about the B2710 or B2910 but from what I have heard they are also great tractors for their size. If you're looking into buying a backhoe you might want to check out and L35 or B21 or the new L48 however unless ordered now you cant get the L48 until next June.

Your dealer will most likely know the most about what size tractor you need because you will be able to explain you terrain type etc. Make sure you tell him what implements you would be interested in if any.

Good Luck!

Joe, as you can see there are a bunch of smart, and helpful folks on this board, the suggestions are great. The only one that I might add is something that your dealer might be willing to do, and that is drop a unit off at your property for a day. I know that some dealers will do such a thing if they realy want to make a sale, I know some folks that have had this very thing done, at the most it doesn't hurt to ask. If your dealer doesn't wish to do this then see what he will let you play with around his sales lot, the object is to get seat time on the tractor that you feel will be your choice, before you spend the hard earned $$$$ and find out it wasn't what you expected.
