Which mower?

   / Which mower? #11
New to tractor life. Have property. Used to be plowed. Seeded with Kentucky 31 fescue and grown for years as wild

Lumpy bumpy flat land in Ohio. I purchased and would like to mow. Do I want a brushog? Finish mower? Flail? honestly, I don稚 know the difference, but I don稚 have anything but uneven bumpy ground. No rocks logs or anything like that.

Suggestions for a mower?

Probably a 5-6’ light duty rotary mower. Every 2 weeks in Ohio would mean maybe about 12 cuts per year. A light duty RC should be fine.
If it’s bumpy, like small, sharp bumps, a stump jumper wouldn’t be a bad idea. Chains or belts around the openings will help keep objects from flying out.

I've attached a photo, although it doesn't portray the lumpy bumpy well. It's pretty safe to walk about but there are holes and lumps here and there.

I don't have a roller. Maybe I will look into borrowing one before I cut.

Now that I see that photo, You could probably do it with a rear mount finish mower as well as a rotary cutter. If you do a finish mower, set it high first couple times in case theres rocks or steer around the rocks and dig them out or weed wack them. We call that a meadow or a paddock, which is a semi-maintained field. Consider a used finish mower. That way you won稚 feel bad when you hit your first rock.
You could do a flail mower, but theye more expensive. Unnecessary
It all really depends on what you want the land to look like. Is it a future lawn, future field???

Goal it to build a house and eventually live on the property. I can't seem to find a builder to commit. A finish mower may make the most sense as I could use it through the years as I age.
The girlfriend brought up the idea of mowing and I figured it would be a great way to get her some experience on the tractor.

I would do a 6' finish mower, assuming your machine could lift it easily. Front weights or a loader may be necessary to keep weight on the front.
I ran a 6' Befco finish mower on my old B8200 in similar conditions, but I had to add 150 lbs of suitcase weights up front. Your machine is a few steps up on size than the B8200.

You could probably do that with a finish mower. But with 18 pto hp, I wouldn't go over 5 foot, and probably 4 foot would be better on a finish mower. Could probably do just as well with a 5 foot brush hog. Once you got it mowed a few times, you could always sharpen the brush blades and it would cut more like a finish mower anyway.

When I bought our farm it included a tractor and an older 10' bush hog. I added a Kubota L5740 and a 6' rotary cutter (brush mower). My plan was to buy a Zero Turn mower for the area around the cabin. I researched mowers and had a "Top 3". Figured I'd make the final decision when funds built back up in a year or two.

In the meantime we cut around the house with what we had, the "Brush Mowers".

It quickly became evident that the cut provided by the "Brush Mowers" was more than acceptable. Actually, we are pleased with the cut they provide. Now, 7 years later, we are happy we didn't get a Zero Turn. We used that money combined with selling the original tractor to get another cabbed tractor.

We cut the grass just about every week from April thru October. We are very thankful for having AC during the summer months.

And, there is one less engine requiring maintenance.

I've thought about trying other options but "It ain't broken, doesn't need fixing".
