Number 3... and it will continue to overflow, not filling any other. Mind you, 'they' don't say what the flow rate out of the faucet is.

This is true even in "Downunder" conditions.

With the water/fluid swirling in the "opposite" direction". :)

BCP makes a great point about the faucet. If you apply the same logic to the faucet as to the pipes no water would come out. However their is a drop of water on the outside of the faucet so from that you can infer that water is coming out of the faucet.

Wags I think 4 and 5 would also fill as some of the water spilling out of 3 is going to trickle over and down the outside of the pipes to both 4 and 5; though it may take a long time. Which means, I don't even agree with the guy in the youtube. Unless the water is shutoff after the first cup fills.

Definitely #4.

I saw this on MSN about two months ago. The amazing thing is, all the ideas people have as to why different cups fill first. And yes, this is a very CS model. Made to fool the average person - I sure hope this is not the type problem used to make any important observations.

Depends on the definition of “fill”. #1 will get water first.

To look at the thing cold, I didn't notice the blockages; took it at face value. Like any other test you have to know how to take it and whether or not it's a trick question. I have taken a lot of tests in my time, and knowing what the ground rules are helps considerably. In fact, when I took the LSAT, I bought a book that explained how to take the test and it gave examples. It made all the difference in the world. The "full first" test, however, I don't think it necessarily tests intelligence, but it sure tests how observant you are to minute details!

If we take the sketch at face value, all pipes and cups have been bisected in two parts. That is true because viewed from the side, plugs couldn't be seen unless near sides of the pipes and cups were missing. Water will run out the open side of cup 1.
