I appreciate all the information guys!

I don't really NEED to buy anything of the ones I posted. I am just hoping to get something by spring. I have been watching CL for a while and as far as 4x4 tractors in my budget, I only remember seeing a MF 210 4x4 for $4600 that sold really quick.

I originally was thinking of just getting a 8n but I've just read so much saying you really want a live PTO. Then, I do think the loader would be really nice to have also. I know you get get a loader for a 8n but it seems like a lot are just trip buckets.

Are there some models of older tractors that given my budget you guys would recommend? That way, I can keep an eye out for those.

Keepa lookout for a Massey Ferguson 135 too. Nice machine and plenty of them out there for less than 5k.

Ford 3000, 4000, 5000's are quite popular. (and the newer variants like 3600,4600, etc)

Also see a lot of older internationals with loaders around that price. the 44x4 or 5x4 tractors. (substitute about any number for the x), like a 424, 444, 464, 574, 584, etc

To buy a tractor for less than $5000 requires some looking. I would recommend you be ready to buy with cash in hand and do the foot work. For instance the MF 175, find out which transmission it has and go see it. Look around your locale, ask other locals and see what turns up. If you see something you like then ask if it is for sale and make an offer. This is how used dealers find them.

I do not understand WHY anybody would want any of those 8N , 9N ,2N , ABSOLUTELY worthless . Henry and Harry made tons of money on the produce 1000 a day philosophy . 3 PT Will not lift unless PTO running ,too light to do any real work , aka draft control . Draftomatic was mearly cheater fora tractor that could not plow .But he could produce AND SELL .

Thats a bit harsh.

Sure there are lots better options. But keep in mind that the N-series is 70+ year old tech. It was designed to replace a horse. And they are still useful today. But tractors have come a long way in 70 years.

To say it cant do real work is like saying a Kubota BX or B cant do real work either

Leaving the issue of a loader aside for the moment, I think your hunch for something in the MF 200 series is sensible. Most of them had stuff like power steering and 2 stage clutch as standard with no multi-power. Parts for most of them are cheap and easy to find and they are built like tanks. I would be careful however, of the 210 as they were I think the only one in the 200 series to be built in Japan by Hinomoto for Massey and they are quite rare....getting parts for them may be a real headache.

Edit: The 205 was made by Toyosha, Japan.

I have to disagree on a point.

N plowed VERY WELL with a 2 bottom plow. Draft is a bonus / benefit when plowing. not a crutch.
