It would be a tough choice between diesel and NG. Tough for me, as I know so little about the NG distribution system. Not that, that is an option for me anyway. At least no one can steal or commandeer your NG.

In general. I feel the less reliant you are on anything external to you, the better.

A good thing about Diesel is in the event of a disaster... Diesel should be the least affected and not near as dangerous to transport...

I think I would be out of luck calling for a propane delivery or having to wait for underground gas lines to be repaired.

The University Lab had the best of both worlds when I attended... they had set up a compressed natural gas storage and it was part of strategic defense...

The beauty was the natural gas flowed through regular underground pipes and was compressed on site providing a minimum of 30 days held in reserve.

Not sure but had heard of home Compressed Natural Gas stations in the 70's for those that converted vehicles to CNG

I have a friend who has two NG gas wells on his Lake Erie property. Heats everything whether it's used or not. He put in a slow running Generac generator, but was extremely P/Oed when he learned of some low life timing belt and that on a interference type motor.

The generac (propane) I installed for a customer at his cottage as a favor sounded much like a lawn mower running full tilt inside a large steel garbage can. If I were a neighbor, I wouldn't be happy. So not only might I not have power, now I have to listen to THAT? It's actually kind of ignorant, if you're close to your neighbors.
We have inverter generators in Boston in part because we don’t want to be broadcasting we have a genset, which are portable.

The plug to the house service is near the street. Have a 40’ Reliance cable so we can keep the unit behind the house and fences.

No neighbors in NH but we put the Kohler on the far side of the garage. Can’t hear it unless windows are open.

I second the choice of diesel as fuel of choice in case SHTF.
Diesel has a storage life of years if properly stored.
It has a higher energy content and is easier and safer to store than any other fuel. If you heat with oil then you have a large supply on hand for a generator and if you want you can have 2 or 3 275 gallon tanks for a very long term outage. It can obtained and transported to your home where NG or propane must be delivered.
Todays small diesels also start reliably in cold weather.
The only down side to diesel is that it must be handled properly to minimize contamination and filtered using a 10 micron or better filter and a water block.
That being said there is not a more reliable or efficient prime mover than a well maintained diesel engine.

I have a Miller Bobcat welder on a trailer. Because we have frequent power outages out here my homestead is set up so I can disconnect outside power completely, plug in the Bobcat, and use it to power the place.

My generator is abit of overkill for just the house it's a 25KW PTO unit,
my 8050 handles it nicely on the 540E setting at about 1750rpm,
my IH574 runs it easily on 540 but it does search some on the 1000 shaft and throttled down,
I am looking for a 6 to 8 kw diesel powered unit for nights and light load periods.
Water pump and heat but haven't found one I'll pay for yet, I can and do run for n hour go out shut down sleep for 4
get up run it for an hour and repeat which is a royal pain.

LouNY These things I have tried. Changing speeds on an Onan 15K PTO set. I thought for a few lights and fridge the little JD 770 with a 2:1 PTO box would do it. No way. Disappointing. The PTO set must run close to 60 HZ. I'm sure 50-70 would work except your UPSes might not accept that power. Your not syncing up with anything.

I use a 500# 3000 Watt telecom inverter for night use, using the 48 volt batteries in my E-Gator. Just lights, which are out when sleeping, the fridge, and water heater shut off. I did get a small freezer this summer so I have to reevaluate that matter.

I would like to have a Listeroid for night use!

I ran my 25kw generator PTO generator with my little 650 JD 17 hp 13 pto and it hanfkedvmy lights and essentials with minimal droop.
I’m surprised your 770 is having problems.
Are you sure that there’s not an unknown load somewhere.
Perhaps you should use a clamp on amp meter to verify the load.
Once my pto was engaged I set the rpm on the high side around 63hz to allow for droop.

I would like to have a Listeroid for night use!
I would like a listeroid also!!
